Advantages: Soothing, gentle, easy to apply

Disadvantages: None I know of.

They came on silent wings, unannounced and uninvited, through a forgotten, half-open window. Single-minded in their purpose and utterly ruthless, never for one moment swaying from their mission. How many of them came I will never know. Nor will I ever know why they chose me as their victim. But as I lay there, helpless against their attack, they sought to drain my very life-blood. Then, as I slept on unaware, they left, just as silently and swiftly as they had arrived.

But the next morning I found the evidence of their nocturnal visit. Great red, itchy lumps on my midriff and legs. My God…I’d been bitten! And how they itched! I scratched like someone demented. Thank goodness I had a tube of “Antisan” in the medicine cabinet.

There are two kinds of insects which bite or sting; those who are venomous, such as wasps, hornets and bees, and those who are not, such as fleas, lice, bedbugs, ticks and mosquitoes. In most cases there is only a localised reaction, such as a red, itchy swelling which, although extremely irritating, is not normally painful or dangerous. What the little blighters do is inject their saliva, which contains an anti-coagulant, so that they can sup on your blood.

“Antisan” cream contains an anti-histamine which will quickly relieve the itching and inflammation. The active ingredient is mepyramine maleate BP, in a white, unscented cream base. The cream rubs in easily and the relief is almost instant.

The cream should be gently rubbed onto the affected areas up to three times daily and for a maximum period of three days (or as advised by your health professional). I have found that I only need to use the cream two or three times before the redness and swellings begin to subside.

Do not, however, use “Antisan” on broken skin, or on eczema. Stop using “Antisan” at once should you develop any skin sensitivity. If after three days of use there is no imp
rovement you should consult your doctor.

“Antisan” cream is available from pharmacies and costs around £3.00 for a 25g tube, and I think it is well worth having in your home first-aid cabinet.”Antisan” cream is made Rhone-Poulenc-Rorer Family Health, West Malling, Kent.

Postscript.

Although for most of us insect bites and stings are a minor, if unpleasant, inconvenience, for some people they can be much more serious. If any of the following occur after a bite or sting seek medical help at once: these symptoms may indicate a condition called anaphylactic shock which can be fatal.

Severe swelling, especially facial.
Shortness of breath.
Wheezing.
Difficulty in swallowing.
Light-headedness.
Loss of consciousness.

Wish I'd taken some with us when we went to Aus. Jake had over 40 bites and I had over 20. It cost us a fortune in cream that didn't work and then tablets.
