PROBLEM… Haemorroid /haem’eroid/ [Gk, haima + rhoia, flow], a varicosity in the lower rectum or anus caused by congestion in the veins of the haemorrhoidal plexus. The haemorrhoids can be internal, and may become large enough to protrude from ‘you know where’, and may bleed when you go to the loo. External haemorrhoids are usually not painful and do not tend to bleed unless the vein ruptures or thromboses…NICE! If like me you suffer from this problem, you will no doubt refer to it as simply ‘piles’. Or at times that annoying pain in the bum! You will almost certainly be aware that this annoying protrusion can be caused by straining to go to the loo, constipation, and prolonged sitting. Also if you are female and have ever been pregnant then you almost certainly suffered from these. SOLUTION… 1, Avoid straining, constipation, or being pregnant! 2, Treat them to a smothering of Anusol, sit back (if its not too painful), and feel the relief immediately! Anusol, in my humble opinion is wonderful stuff. Since I was only a little girl, I have known all about its magical healing effects, as my Father always had some at hand (ointment or suppositories) for those painful episodes (of which there were many…). Unfortunately, I did not always know how to say the name, hence why it is now affectionately known in my family as Anus Oil…(Surely this is a more descriptive and therefore suitable name)! Now that I am approaching old age (30 next year), I too have the inevitable tube close at hand, as I have inherited my Fathers affliction, and trust the old family favourite to ease my pain. The preparation is to be used to give temporary relief for the pain, itching, soreness and burning of haemorrhoids. Trust me it does just that. Sometimes the problem seems to disappear immediately, or else it will subside over a d
ay or two. If you still have the symptoms and no improvement after seven days then you should consult your GP, just to let him/her check that all is ok. It can be used externally to sooth the irritated area, or by screwing on the white plastic dispersing cap which comes with the tube, it can be applied internally, to the lower portion of the anal canal, although this may make your eyes water! Before applying you should, if possible cleanse the area with a mild soap and warm water, and dried well. Then you may apply the ointment, and repeat up to 5 times during the day. After application you should obviously wash your hands thoroughly. Anusol can be quite difficult to remove from your skin, so plenty of warm water, soap, and a nail brush are to be recommended! The active ingredients which Anusol ointment contains are, zinc oxide, bismuth oxide, and bismuth subgallate. These are astringents, which cause contraction of the tissues to which they are applied. Peru balsam is another active ingredient of the ointment. It comes from the trunk of the tree myroxylon balsamum. It is antiseptic, because of its cinnamic and benzoic acid content. The inactive ingredients are magnesium stearate, cocoa butter, anhydrous lanolin, castor oil, light kaolin, and petroleum jelly. Obviously if you are sensitive to any of these ingredients then you should not use Anusol, similarly if any further irritation is caused when you apply Anusol then you should discontinue its use. So, some advice to those of you who suffer…Get some Anusol and get rid of the irritation. It sure makes sitting down a lot more comfortable. Put away your rubber ring, banish the pain in the bum jokes, and rush out now to your chemist and pick up the ointment that will make your life more comfortable. Or for those who prefer (I understand this is how the French take most of their medicines), you could always try the suppositories, although
I can’t get to grips (sorry…!) with them myself. For those of you with a thirst for knowledge, the UK licence holder for Anusol is Warner-Lambert Consumer Healthcare, and they can be contacted at: Lambert Court Chestnut Avenue Eastleigh Hampshire SO53 3ZQ
