Advantages: Great value, reasonable quality
Disadvantages: See Review
It was whilst I was shopping in my local Asda supermarket that I remembered I needed a box of tissues for the house. After seeing that my usual brand was out of stock and the space on the shelf where said usual brand should be was empty, I opted instead to purchase the 'Asda Smart Price' tissues.
I noted that by choosing this brand I would be saving around 75 pence on my shopping costs, and I was quite happy to be making this saving. The oblong box of Asda Smart Price tissues only cost me 25 pence.
I have used the 'Tesco Value' brand of tissues in the past and know from using these that they are reasonable, especially given the low cost. I was keen to see if the Smart Price branded facial tissues were of the same reasonable quality.
Provided in a cardboard box which is oblong shaped, the Smart Price tissues are by no means a fashionable looking product. The packaging is on a par with other products from the Smart Price brand and is very basic looking and quite uninspiring.
Such things alone are not enough to deter me personally though, and given that I have been very impressed with several products from the Smart Price range in the past, I couldn't be put off by the look of the packaging.
The top of the oblong-shaped box has an oval shaped opening which can quite easily be removed to allow access to the box of tissues. I can see on the reverse of the box that there are 150 tissues contained and an average size of the tissues is given. A little detail about the Asda guarantee is provided also, along with some recycling information.
The tissues themselves are a very generous size. I do think that they are more than capable of coping with my 'nasal needs' in any case! Whilst the tissue material is not the softest I have ever used, neither is it the roughest and I didn't find that they were uncomfortable to use on my face or nose. I did think that the feel of the tissues wasn't the nicest or softest either, but please remember that the whole box had only cost me 25 pence, so I was neither surprised nor disappointed that this was the case.
The tissues are 2- ply, and whilst other cheaper brands of tissues seem to detach from themselves in terms of the 2- ply (a rather annoying little habit of the cheaper tissue, I find) I did find that the Asda Smart Price tissues didn't really present this problem. They seem to stay together better and this could not be said about the rival product from the Tesco Value range... The Tesco offerings seem to disintegrate much more easily than these tissues and they come apart more easily - sometimes as a result of simply being pulled from the box.
The tissues are fairly absorbent, but not overly so. A small spillage on our table yesterday was easily mopped up by using the tissues, but only after a small handful of tissues had been used. Given that such a large amount of 'liquid' doesn't generally escape from my nose though (!!!) I do find that they are absorbent enough for my needs around the house.
All in all, I would recommend the tissues, particularly if you are trying to cut down on your shopping costs or have a strict budget to stick to. They are a very reasonable product and given the tiny price I would have thought that they would be ideal for students, and also people with a young family.
I am going to award these tissues full marks, even though there are better products out there. I really think they deserve this award though - given the tiny price of this product, I think it offers terrific value and will continue to buy them instead of my usual brand! :-D
Summary: A brilliant value product offering reasonable quality...

- 14/09/09 I think Asda and Tesco use the same makers for their 25p/box brands. They are so similar. |

- 14/09/09 Tissues are the one thing that I tend to splurge on as I really love the Kleenex balsam ones! |
