Advantages: Works, and works quickly
Disadvantages: Tastes a bit 'chalky'
I suffer, at times, quite badly with heartburn. This is very unpleasant and is due to hydrochloric acid from the stomach travelling up the oesophagus causing a burning sensation in the chest and throat, not something you want to happen if you can help it!
For me, the worst, and yet most likely time to get heartburn is during the night. I believe that this is because, when you're lying down, acid can travel up the oesophagus easier than when you're standing upright. Having heartburn at night prevents me from getting to sleep, so I make sure that I have a good remedy to hand.
Heartburn is very common so there are many products on the market to treat the symptoms. The brand leader is, I think, Gaviscon. I prefer Asilone.
Asilone is available in tablet form (about the size of an old style 5p piece but twice as thick) and in liquid form. Both tablet and liquid have the same ingredients, just the delivery method is different so this review covers both types.
Personally, I prefer the tablets. They take longer to act, as you have to suck on the tablet to release the active ingredients, but I'd rather do this thank take the 5ml dose of liquid in one gulp.
Asilone has three active ingredients, aluminium hydroxide and magnesium oxide neutralise the acid removing the cause of the pain, and activated dimethicone. The dimethicone removes pain caused by trapped wind (apparently, small bubbles of trapped wind are gathered together into large ones to be burped or farted, nice!).
Unsurprisingly, because of its ingredients, Asilone tastes a bit chalky. It's not terribly unpleasant, but it's not great either. There are two flavours, so you can have spearmint chalky or peppermint chalky flavours! The medicine does leave an aftertaste of mint, but to me this just tells me that the medicine has worked and is still working, so it's not a problem.
The great thing about Asilone is that it works and works quickly. I can wake at night with horrible heartburn, and within minutes of taking Asilone, the pain has gone away. On occasion, however, I've had a really bad case of heartburn and it takes two tablets to relieve the pain.
I've found that once I've removed the pain (with one or at the most, two doses), the effect does not wear off and the pain does not return (other people may be different, however).
Asilone costs about £3.00 for 24 tablets or about £3.50 for a 200ml bottle (40 doses), so it is reasonably good value for money. I wouldn't be without it and can recommend you to give it a try if you suffer from heartburn.
Summary: Well worth trying if you suffer as I do
