Advantages: Useful analgesic and anti-platelet.

Disadvantages: Can cause GI problems.

Aspirin is a widely used analgesic, anti - inflammatory and anti - pyretic. Made from a precursor (salicylic acid) which is found in Willow tree bark, its is a relatively cheap choice of pain relieif. As with all medicaments, aspirin is not without its side effects. Aspirin tends to be harsh on the stomach lining, this can, in some cases, cause gastric problems. Aspirin thereforemust be taken with food and water, this protects the oesophagous and the rest of the Gastro - Intestinal tract.
Aspirin can also be used as a blood thinner, with anti- platelet properties, by inhibiting a cyclooxygenase. Some patients may be advised to take aspirin (usually 75mg) if they have related cardiac problems. Children are not adivised to take aspirin, therefore checks of the persons age may be implimented in the place of purchase.
Aspirin is therefore an active ingredient with more than one use, although it is not without its problems.

Summary: Useful, not without its problems.
