Advantages: Very good general pain relief, prevents further heart failures
Disadvantages: Many side effects that can effect many people
Aspirin celebrated its 100 years in existence this year and is the most widely used medicine in the world today. A staggering 35,000 tonnes of Aspirin is consumed every year and this is enough to make over 3100 Billion Aspirin tablets. Aspirin is short for acetylsalicylic acid and possesses various properties that make it a very versatile medicament and thus a very popular and recommended one. Uses for Aspirin -------------------- 1) Pain Relief Aspirin is an analgesic and therefore is effective against pain relief. It is also an anti-inflammatory agent and therefore helps alleviate swelling associated with arthritis and other minor injuries. It can be used more most general pains such as headaches, body aches, muscular aches etc. 2) Against Fever Aspirin is also an antipyretic compound, which means that it helps reduce fever. Many other medicines used to treat fever and used in the reduction of body temperature contain aspirin. 3) For Your Heart One of the most dynamic uses of Aspirin is for the heart. Small dosages of aspirin make the blood flow better through narrow veins in your body. It basically makes some small particles in the blood, which are known as platelets, less sticky. This therefore makes the blood less likely to form clots in the narrow blood vessels. Clots are the primary cause for heart attacks. Persons who have previously suffered heart attacks primarily use it for this purpose. However it has not been proven to help those who have not yet suffered a heart attack but some tests carried out on a small number of people have shown that it may significantly help in preventing a heart attack. Dosages ---------- For Pain/Fever – The dispersible tablets are used in this case and these are the most common form of aspirin. Each tablet usually consists of 300mg. The usual dosage for treatment of pains and fever is two or three tablets dissolved in a glass of water. You must
wait a minimum of four hours before proceeding with the next dose. You must not take more than 13 tablets in 24 hours. The dosages, mentioned above, are for adults and children over the age of 12 years. For The Heart – The soluble effervescent tablets are more commonly used for this treatment. Each tablet consists of 75mg of aspirin and the usual dosage is one or two tablets dissolved in a glass of water daily. These dosages are for adults and children over the age of 12 years. Price Information ---------------------- As is the case with most medicines the prices can vary very significantly on the brand that you may wish to purchase. Aspirin if bought in its generic form is sold at around £0.40 for 30 of the 300mg tablets at Pharmacy2u. However if you were to purchase the same tablets under a brand name of say Anadin you would end up paying £2.15 for just 16 tablets or the Boots Soluble Aspirin for £0.35 for 16 tablets. The generic form basically has the same ingredients but without the brand. However what you stand to gain from a branded product is total assurance of quality and excellent packing. The 75mg soluble tablets go for just £1.00 per 100 tablets at Pharmacy2u. Side Effects/Adverse Reactions/Warnings ---------------------------------------------- ---- One of the most common effects is indigestion. Naturally it should not be used by anyone suffering from any form of ulcers and for those you suffer from heartburn. However for those that do suffer from heartburn and are still keen on talking aspirin it should only be taken after food. Skin rashes are common in some people aswell as swelling of the face and mouth and sometimes difficulty in breathing. Aspirin must not be taken by those with any bleeding disorders whatsoever. Aspirin may also be unsuitable for those suffering from blood pressure and liver or kidney disease. It is always advisable to
consult your doctor when taking aspirin especially if you are suffering from any other ailments and are taking any other medications. Conclusion -------------- With its widespread use and availability one might be forgiven for thinking of aspirin as an innocuous drug. However this is far from the truth as you can see from the high risks of side effects and adverse reactions. This is extremely surprising since most persons would have dropped most other drugs with such alarming side effects like a “Hot Potato”. However this has not been the case with aspirin and as time has elapsed we have learnt how to use this wonder drug to its full effect. Personally I first started using Aspirin in my younger days and eventually changed to Paracetamol due to its surge in popularity at the time. My wife on the other hand has always been an avid user of aspirin and despite my attempts to get her to use Paracetamol, she stuck to her guns and insists on using only aspirin. About a year ago I found out about the benefits of aspirin and after doing a substantial bit of “information gathering” from the Internet, my findings and belief in aspirin were further cemented. Despite aspirin not having been proven to help healthy persons with their hearts I still have that impression that it does and as mentioned earlier in this opinion, the signs are good. I am now in my late thirties and this is the time to really start thinking about your health and what you eat and what you drink. If aspirin can produce the same effect as paracetamol for the treatment of common occurrences like headaches and other general pains, then why not use it instead of paracetamol. The only negative aspect that I am personally facing is that I sometime suffer from heartburn and should I happen to suffer a headache or other pain whilst have an attack of heartburn you can certainly count me out in taking asp
irin. Otherwise it will do just fine. For those of you not yet aware of the benefits of aspirin I strongly urge you to do a bit of homework and you will be pleasantly surprised at the potency of this commonest of drugs.
