Avon Sleep-therapy Sleep Balm
Why Did I Buy This Product?
I have always had problems trying to get to sleep at night; research shows that many people do. If you have ever lain in bed at night absolutely exhausted trying to get to sleep, but things keep popping into your head randomly, you will know what I mean. So when my Avon representative dropped off the latest catalogue I decided to invest in |Avon sleep therapy sleep balm| the description read:
Rub a little into your temples or wrists to help you drift off to sleep. Great for travel. Non-greasy.
Also quite a large picture was shown.
Price, size and value
The sleep balm cost £2.50, which is its original price. I suppose for such a small price the value was ok. The balm can be used for up to 12 months which I would expect. When the sleep balm arrived I was quite shocked at how small it was, and when I placed it on top of the one in the brochure, the one on the page was twice the size! I read through the description twice to see if I had accidently ordered a sample version, but then I noticed in tiny writing at the bottom, 10ml. Eventually, night time came, and it was time to test the product;
Using the product
I sat up in bed ready to go to sleep, and rubbed a little onto my wrists and temples, then lay down waiting to drift off into sleep. The scent lasted about 2 minutes, and then faded. It took the usual hour for me to eventually start drifting off.
Scent, looks and touch
The Avon sleep therapy sleep balm smells absolutely divine whilst in the pot. It didn't smell of lavender or camomile as you would expect, but of a totally unique smell. I have never smelled anything quite like it! But, I am afraid that once you have rubbed it onto yourself, the smell fades and you don't even notice it is there, apart from the grease.
The balm is a white, translucent colour, but when rubbed into skin is clear. It does look quite shiny on the skin, but when you wake up the next morning is gone, and doesn't appear on the pillow either, which is one of its only good points.
Touch against skin.
The balm feels quite greasy, but not sticky. It does go all over your fingers though. It feels greasy for about an hour after putting it on. This may not be good if it is a hot night. Also it got stuck at the front of my hair, so my hair was quite greasy at the front the next day, and had to wash my hair in the morning before school, and I am already bad at getting up in the morning!
Packaging and presentation
The sleep balm was not boxed, like most Avon products, but just a plastic tub. I suppose this is better for the environment so I would say it is a good thing. The tub itself is made of clear plastic, and you can see the white balm inside. The lid is opaque white, which screws onto the tub. On the top of the lid, is a blue sticker, with stars and clouds on it, made to look like twilight time. At the top of the sticker it has the Avon logo, then the sleep therapy logo about mid-way down the sticker. Then it says;
And then the word "sleep balm" repeated in many languages. I can't say that I felt someone had worked hard on its presentation.
Things I find work better
Some people use lavender bags to help them get to sleep. I think this works, but something I have found works better is lavender ice cream or sorbet. I understand that this is a hard thing to purchase, but I recommend buying if you ever see any. I ate some one afternoon and I was so tired by the time I got to bed I just fell straight asleep, quite early too!
Another remedy is to drink Camomile tea before bed. I have noticed this helps slightly, but not a great deal. Also "quiet time" is a great thing to have before bed. Take an hour before you go to bed just to relax, with no noise. Listen to some quiet music on headphones, or read a book.
Which is the best?
From personal experience, it must be said, having the radio on at minimal volume really does work! It is also said to extend the mind. I find that the boring tone of voice instantly helps me to drift off. Of course the only problem is, how will you turn the radio off when you are asleep? Perhaps have it on a timer or have someone who lives with you to turn it off for you.
Other Sleep therapy products
Sleep therapy also offers a dreamy body wash, to have a calming shower before bed, and a goodnight pillow mist. This is a scent which helps you drift off. I have not tried these products, and am not going to either from what I have previously bought from this brand, which was to be honest, a bit of a let down.
