Advantages: Seems to do the trick

Disadvantages: Expensive, messy, hard to apply, slow acting

I am the Princess of Bare Feet. As soon as I get home, off come the shoes and socks, and normality is resumed. But there are some drawbacks to this, including standing on sharp toys your precious ones have left lying around, but one I didn’t know about until recently is that you can get corns. These are hard patches of skin on your feet. See, you learn something every day at Dooyoo!

Being the sort that rushes my kids off to the Doctors too soon, but forgets about my own health, I didn’t think there was a problem until my feet seemed to have developed little growths. Yep, quite revolting. On those little puffy pads under your little toes, I had big circular lumps under mine. They had become painful and it felt like walking on two hard bits.

So, in tabloid style, I STRIPPED OFF my socks and EXPOSED the underside of my feet to my in-laws, who diagnosed corns. Hmm. Not heard of those before, so off I went to my friendly neighbourhood chemist and asked if I could buy something to get rid of them. I was shown a couple of products, but recommended Bazuka Gel at a whopping great £4.95 for a tiny tube, an emery board and an instruction leaflet! I was also warned that if it didn’t work, I’d have to see my GP for manual extraction or something. Ow.

This was almost three weeks ago. Every evening since then, I have had a strange ritual to follow. Bathe my feet (Don’t mind that bit, it’s nice and relaxing), peel off the layer of gel and dead skin that comes with it (I do hope you aren’t eating…), use the emery board to file off the edges, apply more gel and leave it.

Not only is all that rigmarole extremely fiddly, it has become quite an entertainment for my family. First of all, Mummy stands with her foot in the sink, exercising muscles she hasn’t used since giving up competitive gymnastics as a teenager! Then she sits on the loo and peels bits of skin off, moaning about her nails splitti
ng. Then she squeezes gel on and contorts her legs in weird positions, so she can apply fresh gel without it sliding off the side of her foot. Then she hops into the bedroom (waiting for gel to dry), complaining about her aches and pains from these new weird exercise routines. Bizarre. Totally.

But does it work? Well, yes. And no. And not sure. My feet are much better, that’s true. My left one is almost smooth again and the big central lump has gone. My right one is still a big lumpy mess, now a white lumpy mess due to the dried gel that will be scraped off tonight, in-between any good telly.

It is fussy, messy, annoying and makes me look stupid even more than usual – but my corns are going, kind of. Surely after three weeks, things should be much better than they are though. Oh well, I’ll keep on with the treatment and see what happens. If I have to contort my body into unnatural positions much more, I’ll soon be writing about waiting lists in the NHS as I try to get my hips replaced.
