Advantages: Works quickly, good for headaches and coughs.

Disadvantages: Not so good for a blocked nose, expensive.

Well it's that time of year again when a lot of people are getting colds and I am no exception! I usually suffer throguh them but with it being Christmas, which I want to be well enough to enjoy, and when I am spending a fortune anyway, I thought I would pick up a bottle of Beechams.

I was attracted to the product over other cold remedies because I know that Beechams is a trusted brand and because it says on the bottle that it is non-drowsy, and of course, like everyone, I have too much to do at this time of year to be able to fall asleep in the middle of the day!

Also, I like the fact that the carton (the bottle comes in a carton) states that it helps with a headache, blocked nose, sore throat, and chesty cough.

When I started to take this, I was already past the sore throat stage of my cold, but I had a terrible headache, had to breathe through my mouth and had an uncomfortable cough. The box says to take 20ml every four hours, but not to take more than four doses in 24 hours. So, I took my first dose when I got home from shopping, and within about half an hour I could feel a slight life of my symptoms. I thought that this was wonderful and it was quite a boost, to think that hosrtly I would feel even better. I did- after a couple of hours I felt that my throat, though not sore, was soothed, and this helped with my cough, and we all not it is disconcerting to keep coughing- especailly when you are trying to listen to someone speaking, or when you're in a group of people or at dinner. My headache also got better, but I think that this is due to the fact that the liquid contains paracetamol. I found it easier to breathe through my nose but I don't think that the effect was as pronounced as it was on my other symptoms.

After four hours had passed, I took another dose, and it was after this one that I really started to feel better. A couple of days later and I still have my cold but I think that medicines such as this only relieve your symptoms- which of course is what it implies on the box- and that to really get better, to get rid of your cold, you need to look after yourself. For me this means Vitamin C, hot drinks, healthy food and a chance to put my feet up!

The bottle I bought contains 8 doses. I don't think this is very much because if you take the four doses a day that you are allowed, then a bottle will only last two days. I think I paid about four quid for this and I think that is quite a lot if you go through a bottle every two days. Still, I hope that anyone with a cold and needing to take medicine such as this would start to get better and not need more than one or two bottles of this, and we all know that there's nothing like a cold to make you feel rubbish! For those reasons I think that this is a nice little treatment in the short term, but that the main thing to think about is getting better, when you have a cold.

I would like to point out that the box says not to take this with other medicines or if you are pregnant, and that you should see your doctor first. Also, it says that 'if symptoms persis consult your doctor'.

I hope you all have a healthy and cold-free Christmas!

Summary: Good for symptom relief!

This is a good review, focussing on the effect the product had rather than simply regurgitating what's on the box - I like that!

Cheers
