I don't think they are quite as effective as a hot water bottle, especially because they are quite small and don't get as hot. The pads are self-adhesive and they do stay where they are supposed to so you don't have to worry about them slipping down your trouser leg! They are horrible to put on as they are cold and slimy. FemEase are heatpads which are designed to be used for period pain. You stick them to your stomach and they slowly warm up, the heat is supposed to relax the muscles and encourage the supply of oxygen to the painful area. Any woman who suffers from bad period pain probably worships her hot water bottle! I certainly do and have always wished that someone would design an extremely thin hot water bottle which could be tucked down the front of my trousers for when I go out!
