Boots Ibuprofen Caplets
by cornishchic
I am always buying stores own brand pain relieving tablets. Most of the time they are very effective and are a fraction of branded products prices. One store brand I buy from is Boots, I prefer purchasing from supermarkets but when you can't get to one, Boots is ideal.
As these ibuprofen caplets are a Boots product, these ... ibuprofen caplets can only be purchased from Boots either in store or online. A packet of 16 caplets currently costs £1.58.
As it's a Boots branded product, the packaging isn't anything to shout about. It's mainly grey in colour with the Boots logo and features a picture of two of the caplets. The back of the packaging contains all of the normal information you get with medication, warnings, dosage information and such. Inside the box you will find an information leaflet that goes into more details about the product, what it can be used for, who can take it, warnings and such so you can be sure whether or not you can take it and how often. Also inside the packaging you will find two blister trays which home the individual caplets.
Each blister pack holds eight of the 200mg ibuprofen caplets. I find it easy to squeeze each of the caplets out of the trays and have only encountered one or two snapping on removal since buying these. The dosage information says that you can take 1 or 2 caplets every four hours and no more than 6 in a 24 hour period. It also tells you that you should take them with or after food. I find these caplets a lot easier to swallow than tablets as they have a sort of sugar coating on them making them smooth and easily to glide down. I usually swallow my caplets with a swig of water just to help them go down. They aren't very big so I would imagine most people should be able to swallow them without any problems.
After taking two of these caplets I find they take around 30 minutes to get to work and they do relieve pain and leave me pain free. They work just as well as branded ibuprofens and work for just as long too. I find after around the 3 hour mark it tends to wear off.
I'd definitely recommend these Boots ibuprofen caplets. They are effective on aches and pains and work for a good amount of time. They are quite a bit more expensive than supermarket brands ibuprofen but when you can't get to a supermarket these are ideal. Read the complete review |

Boots Dual Action Ear Wax Remover
by kubs1989
I suffer from wax blockages regularly. I picked this up in boots recently for around £4 - simply because it was cheaper than the leading brand! The product is dual action, in that it softens hardened wax, and also helps disperse wax in the canal, thanks to the Hydrogen Peroxide.
The small 10ml bottle is easy to open and easy ... to squeeze. The manufacturers recommend 5 drops to be inserted into the canal up to twice a day. I can't really tell how much I am putting into my ear as I cannot see or feel the drops! But I squeeze the bottle a couple of times until me ear canal seems full of fluid. Within 30 seconds a very odd fizzing sensation occurs - due to Hydrogen Peroxide. This seems to last a couple of minutes maximum. Excess solution does run out of the ear and is easily wiped up with a tissue, leaving only a slight oily reside on the skin.
After application, depending on the amount of wax in the ear, you may feel completely blocked up in the earl. My hearing also reduced in the suspect ear. I continued to apply to solution to my ear twice a day for 4 days - as recommended. Unfortunately, after this time my ear was still fully occluded with wax and my hearing was down. I then had to make an appointment with my Practice Nurse to have my ears irrigated. Thankfully due to use of the drops, the wax was very soft and easy to remove.
These drops are good to use to prevent wax build up and to soften hardened wax. The ear naturally clears itself, sometimes it needs a bit of lubrication to do this. The drops are not effective in ears which are already heavily blocked up with wax - like mine were. In these circumstances the only option to have them cleared professionally.
It goes without saying to read the label and follow instructions - do not use these drops if you have a history of ear conditions or infections.
Overall, a good preventative measure - but so is olive oil....... Read the complete review |

Boots Nirolex Chesty Cough and Congestion Relief Linctus
by Elaineee
I hate coughing, drives me mad and the rest of the household (I get no sympathy in this house) so need a good cough mixture. I don't buy anything that just soothes I always go for cough medicines that have an active ingredient, rather than just a soother.
I mostly go for Boots as find them to be helpful. I ask for the cheapest ... and am always recommended to buy their own brand goods.
I like Boots cough suppressant Pholcodine which I am pleased with therefore I was more than happy to purchase it's opposite- cough expectorant. Not cheap though I think I paid around £3 the last time I bought it and now on their web-site it's £3.50 for only 150ml. This is available behind the counter.
Unlike Pholcodine this comes boxed. It's a grey box with a red bloke on the front, it says it's 'Nirolex Chesty Cough Relief linctus', also that it's 'Non drowsy, Soothes and relieves chesty coughs'. The bottle is small, plastic and has a tricky lid. The cough mixture itself tastes alright and has a nice consistency.
It comes with the usual info- directions, dosage, ingredients etc
Active ingredient: (per 5ml of) Guaifenesin 100mg.
contains: purified water, liquid sugar (sucrose), glycerol (E422), citric acid, sodium citrate, hyetellose, potassium sorbate (E202), acesulfame potaaium, flavours (cream, blackcurrent, menthol)
Boots Chesty Cough Linctus contains Guaifenesin which is an expectorant medicine, which loosens and relieves phlegm on the chest. This particular cough mixture is just the Chesty Cough, there is one available with added decongestant but I'm yet to try that version.
How to Use
Adults and children over 12 are to take two 5ml spoonfuls every 4 hours, up to 4 times a day, and should be swallowed.
My experience:
There's nothing worse than a congested chest, you can tell the difference between this type of cough and a dry cough because a dry cough is just that dry- nothing comes up, it doesn't feel better after a good cough and it's tickly. However a chesty cough is different I actually get breathless with this type, I feel like I'm trying to cough something up, rather than just a horrible hacking. Obviously stuff (phlegm) does come up but not easily or quickly. Taking this medicine definitely helps with this, straight away the syrup itself soothes my throat and gives me a cough break. I am always wary about taking expectorants as I fear they might make me cough more, but it doesn't increase coughing. It helps lessen a cough I suppose because it helps bring stuff up by loosening it without the need to cough so hard. It definitely loosens a tight congested chest, within days of taking it I feel much better. I don't go around coughing up phlegm everywhere, what it seems to do is thin and clear it- probably most of it gets swallowed (I know).
I would definitely recommend this for wet coughs. Read the complete review |
