Soothing cough medicine (Buttercup Original Flavour Syrup)

Advantages: soothing, doesn't taste awful, works!

Disadvantages: quite pricey compared to some own brands

I've been a poorly Becca this last few days, with a horrendous sore throat and a nasty cough alongside it. I've been muddling along with a combinaton of cold tablets and strepsils and also a glucose syrup medicine but it wasn't until I started taking buttercup that it started to subside.

Buttercup is a cough medicine with 2 main active ingredients - squill liquid extract and capsicum tincture - according to net doctor:


"Squill is a plant extract that has a mild expectorant effect." and "Capsicum tincture is present in this medicine to provide an aromatic, "warming" flavour." So the medicune soothes your throat and makes you cough to help get rid of the nastynesses around. It also helps thin the mucus (gross i know!)

The medicine itself is quite sweet, with an undertone which I assume comes from the capsicum (is that not peppers?) and adults should take 2 5ml spoonfuls upto 4 times a day, and shouldn't be taken by children under 2 - in fact they have a childs version for younger people.

In Lloyds chemist yesterday we paid £4.59 for a 200ml bottle. There are other sizes available also. The bottle itself is glass and comes in a green and yellow box, its quite distinctive packaging. It doesn't come with a spoon which is not a problem as a teaspoon will do!

I'd strongly reccomend trying buttercup if you are struggling with a cough or sore throat.
