Advantages: Nice tasting cough syrup.

Disadvantages: none

We have all woke up with that awful tickle in your throat and you just know it's the start of a nasty cold or cough and sore throat, Buttercup syrup is the best cough medicine for coughs colds and sore throats in my opinion. Buttercup syrup is a Very Soothing and effective cough syrup. Traditional original flavour and it actually tastes quite nice for a cough syrup, unlike some you can get, from being a little girl this was the only medicine I didn't mind taking.

This medicine contains two active ingredients, squill liquid extract, Squill is a plant extract with a expectorant effect, and Capsicum tincture is present which provides an aromatic and warming flavour, the active ingredients of this medicine are included in a syrup base which coats and soothes the throat and relieves irritation.

*squill- im afraid I did not know what squill was so had to look it up as I imagined it as some sea urchin or something on those lines, but it isn't it is a Bulb-forming perennial plant belonging to the lily family.
* Cayenne (Capsicum tincture) has been traditionally used for poor circulation, cold extremities, weak nerve force, indigestion, flatulence, expels mucous, hoarseness, colds & flu.

*Other ingredients- acacia powder, ethanol, saccharin sodium, invert syrup, menthol, clove oil, peppermint oil, aniseed flavour, water chloroform, strong ginger tincture, acetic acid, E110, E112, and E1150.

Buttercup syrup comes in a 200 ml tall glass bottle with a breakable seal cap; it is also available in a 75ml bottle. The syrup is Brown in colour and leaves a lovely warming feeling that soothes and eases your throat. Once opened the bottle does not have a safety cap so needs to be stored out of reach of children. The outer packaging is a bright green card board box, with a picture of a yellow buttercup and the wording buttercup syrup. The 200ml bottle was £3.98 in ASDA. The syrup does not come with a 5ml medicine spoon or measuring cap. Other products from this range are Buttercup Infant Cough Syrup, Buttercup medicated sweets

*Directions for use.
Children over 2 years of age: One 5 ml spoonful, three times a day and at bedtime when the cough is troublesome.
Adults and children over l2 years of age: Two 5 ml spoonfuls, three times a day and at bedtime when the cough is troublesome

*Buttercup syrup comes with warnings like most medicines and are as follow
Not suitable for children under 2.
If symptoms persist consult your GP.
Check you are not allergic to any of the ingredients.
There is no information on the safety of the medicine on breast feeding and pregnancy.

Buttercup syrup is manufactured by William ransom and son plc which is the UK's oldest independent pharmaceutical company. It was founded in 1846 and has been based in Hitchin, Hertfordshire for over 160 years. The product licence holder is Pfizer consumer health care.

Overall buttercup syrup is a great tasting cough syrup that I always have a bottle of in my medicine cupboard just in case any one wakes up with a troublesome cough.

Summary: A great medicine that actually tastes ok.
