Advantages: fast efficient and relatively pain free relief
Disadvantages: the taste is pretty gross
I'm pretty fortunate in that I've never suffered from constipation before. However, I had been feeling pretty run down so decided to take some multivitamins with iron in them. My mum warned me that iron can sometimes lead to constipation, but since i've never had trouble before, I thought I'd be fine. How run was I! I'd been taking the tablets for 2 weeks and had to stop as I was pretty constipated. It's never a fun topic to talk about and I didn't really want to have to go to my GP and discuss the ins and (lack of) outs of the whole situation.
Firstly I tried those sachets you can get which you add water to and they are allegedly meant to taste like orange (they really don't, they are increidbly vile), but they didn't work at all. Next, my mum went to the chemist to get me a tablet to regulate me, but all this did was give me terrible stomach cramps and not much relief.
I was getting ready to pull my hair out, when my mum remembered that when she was younger, she was given syrup of figs once a week to keep her regular. So, she looked in Tesco and came across Califig, and I have to say, it was a complete saviour!
I was dubious as to whether a natural laxative would be much use to me, but it definitely did the trick. I could only find the 55ml bottle, which, when taking 2 tablespoons a day, only lasted me for three days, so if you think you will need it for a few days, perhaps the 110ml would be a better option. The medicine tastes likes figs (shocker!) which i personally found pretty rank, but I was always told that if medicine tasted bad then it would work-and its true! I took 2 tablespoons early in the morning, and by early afternoon I was going to the toilet a few times. I had slight stomach cramps prior to going to the toilet, but that was all, and it was much more effective than anything else that I had tried. After a few days, I was back to normal, and very very greatful to have found a medication that actually does what it says on the tin!
