I remember that when I was growing up if I ever suffered an upset stomach I would always reach for the kaolin and morphine mixture that my mum would have in the medicine cupboard. When I moved out kaolin and morphine was something that I added to my medicine cupboard as I suffer stomach upsets reasonably frequently. Kaolin and morphine is basically a medicine which consists of two active ingredients which are light kaolin and morphine hydrochloride. The morphine part isn't actually a pain killer as we may well know it, but is a very small dose which is used to help stop diarrhoea. The kaolin and morphine mixture comes in a glass bottle with a white screw top lid. The bottle is brown and looks very medicinal, which of course it is! The bottle has a white label on the front which you can peel back to read about the product and dosage information and such like. The bottle contains 200ml of the mixture and I bought it from my local chemist where it cost me a pound. Inside the bottle is the kaolin and morphine mixture. Before using the product each time you need it you should make sure that you shake the bottle as the two ingredients separate when standing still in the bottle and they need mixing together. When you take off the lid and pour some of the medicine you will notice that it is a very pale pink in colour with a slight minty smell. Now as I mentioned the product is intended for use to help settle down any bouts of diarrhoea and it can also help with upset stomachs in general as it helps to neutralise any stomach acids as well as bulk up solid waste in your system. I have found that if I am suffering from a particularly uncomfortable stomach ache that I can use this product and it will help to ease the stomach cramps and pain associated with an upset stomach. The product is easy to take and I find the taste quite pleasant to be honest providing that the medicine has been mixed together properly! Once mixed it tends to come out on to the spoon slightly frothy and it is easy to swallow and tastes minty to me. Once the medicine is in my system it usually takes around half an hour to an hour or so to settle down an pains and whilst this isn't the quickest method by any means I do find that it is usually acceptable for me when I am at home. The dosage information for this medicine is as follows: Adults and children over 12 years: 2 x 5ml spoonfuls up to three times a day if required Children aged 5-12: 1 x 5ml spoonful up to three times a day The medicine is not suitable for those under five years of age. Of course with any kind of medicine you should always read the label before use and with this particular product there are a few warnings such as those with bowel problems, alcoholism, liver disease should not use this product and there are many other conditions listed where by you should be careful in using this product and so I would say it is best to actually speak to the pharmacist when you go in to buy this product to see if it is suitable for you. You should also not rely on this product if you are suffering from an upset stomach which lasts a considerable amount of time really as it is not intended for prolonged usage. Personally I think this medicine is absolutely brilliant. I know that if I do experience some stomach problems that I can take a couple of spoons of this medicine and within a short space of time I will be feeling much more comfortable as a rule. In the past I have also used Imodium tablets but I find that those are better as an option for when you are out and about and I would always prefer to take this medicine if I am at home when an attack strikes. I always try to keep some of the product in my home and I keep it stored in my fridge where it lasts well. Recommended for those who are looking for a cheap, but very good, option for when an upset stomach strikes. Thank you for reading my review!
