Advantages: Cheap and natural

Disadvantages: Can burn the skin if not applied carefully

Over the years I've heard of Clove Oil and that it can be helpful for toothache but thankfully have never had a need to try it out it. Unfortunately during the most romantic weekend of the year my partner fell victim to a nasty absess in his mouth and in desperation I legged it to the chemist to try and find something to relieve his pain.

Other than the usual over the counter tablets the only thing the chemist could recommend was the above mentioned Clove Oil, I was a little sceptical but having no other choice I bought a bottle which cost me a little over £2.

Packaging -
The oil is sold in small glass bottles with child proof lids - very useful if you have children around but not so good if you find them hard to open. I had to give the lid a good hard twist to open it which was rather annoying when I was so stressed out.

Smell -
This is potent stuff and has the smell to match, I was almost knocked out on opening the bottle for the first time. It smells a lot like paint thinner and I was slightly shocked to read earlier today that Clove oil is used in oil painting to stop the paint from drying out too quick!

How to use -
The bottle recommended to apply a small amount of oil to a cotton bud then place that on the affected tooth for a few seconds. If you dont have cotton buds to hand then you can apply it with a small piece of tissue or cotton wool but you must be careful to only get the oil on the tooth and not the surrounding gum or skin as it can burn.

Clove oil is known for its anaesthetic properties and it certainly seemed to help my partner. Applying the oil plus the use of nurofen and salt water has taken away most of the pain and made him much more comfortable until we can see a dentist tomorrow morning.

I'll definitely keep this in the bathroom cabinet for future teeth related emergencies. It's cheap and natural and does work.

Summary: An essential bathroom cabinet item

I swear by clove oil for toothache, although I don't know how effective it is on me as within seconds of applying it I have an intense urge to spit!

That's a blast from the past my Nana always used to use it on us. If it tastes bad or it stings then it's doing you some good....
