Advantages: Effective within minutes

Disadvantages: Strong, unpleasant smell

Having recently suffered from severe toothache and being paranoid about visiting a Dentist, I sought a remedy I recalled from childhood. I saw various concoctions claiming to be the miracle cure, but I reverted back to what I consider to be the best and more importantly, natural remedy.

Clove oil is derived from the clove plant and is a natural analgesic and antiseptic. Eugenol is the active ingredient in clove oil and the reason for its healing properties.

The first step involves rinsing out your mouth with either warm water or mouthwash so that you dissipate any food remnants, then brush your teeth. After that I apply a few drops of clove oil to a cotton bud, ensuring it is soaked in the medicine. I then dab the area with the cotton bud, thoroughly dousing the affected area. If the pain is particularly worse, I tend to leave the bud here for a while, allowing the numbing effect to take place before removing the bud from my mouth.

In terms of use, it simply takes a few drops to alleviate pain - I tend to pour a few drops onto a cotton bud and target the source of pain. This way, you can avoid the very strong, unpleasant taste you get from it. This can be an issue for alot of people but personally I found that the pain I was feeling far outweighed the taste of the clove oil. Within minutes I feel that the pain has begun to subside and I am able to get on with my day.

Clove oil has also been well known for its warming effect with respect to muscle pains, sprains and arthritis. It can also be used as a steam inhalation to relieve symptoms connected with asthma and bronchitis. In its original form it can be used to aid digestion, by infusing it in water to make tea.

As it's the time for gardening (as long as the weather holds up and we get a summer) it's also versatile in its use and can be used to kill weeds. it can also be used to expel those pesky little moths that try to hide in your clothing at this point of the year.

There is one important warning stated on bottles - Do not use during pregnancy. Also, it is not recommended to be used in the long term. This product is for external use only.

It can be purchased in little 10ml bottles over the counter at most chemists and supermarkets. This natural remedy can be purchased for a credit crunch price of £1.14 from www.chemistdirect.co.uk

A brilliant, natural product, recommended particularly for those toothache sufferers out there!

Summary: Cheap, can be purchased pretty much anywhere and it works!
