Advantages: heady, welcoming and warming aroma

Disadvantages: very strong oil, care needed when using

The only kind of Clove Oil that should be used in aromatherapy is clove bud oil. This oil is extracted by steam distillation from the clove tree (myrtaceae). The leaves of this tree are green ans shiney and its an evergreen. The flowers buds are long and red. Only the buds are used and the resulting oil is apale yellowy colour with a sweet, spicey aroma.

Uses:
++++++

Antiseptic,

stimulating,

mouthwash,

gargle,

toothache,

mosquito repellant,

muscle relaxant.

How to use:
+++++++++++

Rub a small amount onto gums to treat toothache. (do not use as a substitute for a dentist!)

Add a couple of drops to a beaker of warm water and use as a gargle. Do not swallow.

Use as a room fragrance and this oil acts as an antiseptic. Useful in the sick room.

Add three drops to a little milk and add to a warm bath for an energising, stimulating effect.

Blend with grapefruit, lemon, orange or peppermint for a more invigourating effect. I like to use 2 drops of clove bud oil and 3 drops of lemon oil mixed with a little vodka, in a warm bath. It's invigourating and gives you that really awake, tingly feeling.

Caution:
+++++++++

Use this oil with great care and make sure that you know what you are doing.

This oil is a powerful skin irritant so never apply it neat to the skin or use too much.

Not suitable during pregnancy. This oil is a powerful muscle relaxant.

Use half the amount recommended on the bottle to be sure it is safe. You will still get the same benefit as this is strong oil. More is not always better with essential oils.

Keep in a safe, secure place and wash hands after use, or after handling the bottle.

Do not take internally. If you are using this as a gargle dilute it as explained above and do not swallow it. Not suitable for children.

Verdict:

++++++++

I love the aroma of clove bud oil but I am not keen on using it because it is so powerful and strong. I certainly wouldn't use it in a bath as I have sensitive skin.

However it is fine used as a room fragrancer and antibacterial agent.

For a very special Christmas room fragrance take an orange and prick the skin in a few places to release the orange oil. Sprinkle with clove oil and rub the oil in. Tie up with a piece of ribbon or string and hang in your room. This smells of Christmas and its welcoming for your family and friends.

I have to agree with idodoyou, the smell reminds me of toothache. Years ago my dad would use it in his mouth when his teeth hurt. Good op though.
