Co-codamol

Due to the road traffic accident I was recently in I have been prescribed these painkillers, these can be bought at the chemist with advise from the dispensary and also prescribed by your doctor.
I advise you to see your doctor before taking these as they are very strong painkillers and can affect you in certain ways if your taking other medicines at the same time.

Co-coda mol come in different strengths 8/500mg 30/500mg and other s which you can buy from the chemist which I do not really know about as I am on prescription medicine at the moment.
I have been prescribed 30/500mg which means there are 30mg of codeine phosphate in the tablets and 500 mg of paracetamol in each tablet. They come in packets of 30 and are to be taken one or two four times a day, but this is only what I have been prescribed and your doctor will advise you on the dosage of the tablets you have to take as each ailment has to be treated separately with advise from the doctor. I would not recommend you going out and buying these for a headache as they are very strong and I find I space off into a daydream like state a few minutes after taking them, as they relax the muscles I have injured in the car accident and also take the pain away.
I am not allowed to drive or operate machinery whilst on these tablets as I probably would end up hurting myself or someone else.

Codeine belongs to the opiod analgesic group of medicine and helps to relieve pain whilst paracetamol is a non opioid analgesic which relieves pain and reduces fever.
The weaker tablets can be taken for period pains, headaches, migraines and toothache whilst the stronger prescription drugs are for more severe pain.

You shouldn’t take these if you have had a head injury, or are an alcoholic, or suffer from asthma or bronchitis.
Do not take if your pregnant or breast feeding and let your doctor know if you are taking any other medicines before taking these as certain drugs react differently with each other and anything which treats sleeping problems, heart problems, low cholesterol or muscles relaxants have to be reported to the doctor before taking these.

When your taking Co-coda mol you should not drink and there is a dependency on these drugs if you have to take them for a long time so try and monitor your intake, I try and only take them when I feel server pain in my back at first after the accident I had to take them as prescribed for the pain as I could not move but now I am a little more mobile I take them only when the pain is too much to put up with as I don’t want to become dependant on them.

The tablets I am taking are prescribed for two every 4-6 hours but like I said I take them now only when I need them which is one three times a day. Never take more then eight tablets in 24 hours and keep these out of reach of children as they are dangerous.
They are NOT recommended for children under 12 years of age.
Take the tablets with water and swallow not chew as they taste disgusting.

There are side effects to taking these co-codamol and these are feeling sick, dizziness, difficulty in passing water, dry mouth, sweating, mood changes, pinpoint pupils, low body temperature, constipation, palpitations, feeling faint, and if you take these tablets for to long a time you can become dependant on them.
I have felt the side effects of dizziness, feeling cold and don’t seem to wee as much as I used to.
So, I presume each person is different and can suffer from other side effects.
In my opinion I couldn’t have done without them they work quickly within ten minutes and take the pain away to a dull numbness which I can live with. The side effects only seem to be noticeable at the early stages of medication as I have been on them for over a month now and I don’t notice any side effects any more. Hopefully that doesn’t mean I am used to them too much.

Make sure you keep them stored out of the light, away from children and in a dry place, and always read the expiry date on tablets as they can do more harm than good if they are out of date.
Also never give them to anyone else as they may not be suitable for them.

I hope this review has helped in some way.

Summary: good but not to be taken for long periods of time

VH review. I've had these before after a couple of ops and fortunately didn't get any of the side effects. I tend not to read that section for fear of psychosymatic (correct spelling? Perhaps not!) symptoms. Hope you are better soon! :-)
