Advantages: numbs pain temporarily, relaxes muscles

Disadvantages: addictive, side effects

I try and avoid codeine wherever possible. Not only is it habit-forming (and it is, a number of people have struggled to wean themselves off codeine) but it also leaves you with a dry mouth, feeling woozy and light-headed and makes you prone to constipation.

Saying that for severe pain it is very effective. It does numb the pain of very bad headaches and muscle pain and it is a very effective muscle relaxant.

I find if I take co-codamol I get very relaxed and giddy, my speech becomes slurred if I can be bothered to speak at all and I wouldn't want to be driving afterwards!

It lasts a couple of hours so after that your pain is returning and you can only take 2 tablets every 4 hours so it's not a long term solution and anyone with chronic pain should avoid these really as they are not for long-term use.

It's very cheap, I have bought some in the past for a measly couple of pounds but try very hard not to take them. I only use them for the occasional migraine not for my chronic joint pain or I'm sure I'd be in an even worse situation than I'm already in.

Only recommended for occasional use.

Summary: Fine for very occasional use
