Advantages: Really works and works quickly, widely available

Disadvantages: More expensive than other products, nasty taste

Covonia mentholated cough mixture can be bought from Boots and Tesco's for about £4.50 for 300ml. This makes it one of the more expensive cough medicines that I have seen, and for that reason I only bought this cough mixture after I had been suffering with a really bad cough for days and was desperate.

The bottle provides details of the ingredients in the mixture, which include menthol for relieving any congestion and both squill and liquid liquorice as expectorants to relieve phlegm. The presence of liquorice in the ingredient list could explain why I personally found the taste of this medicine so horrendous, as I am not a fan of liquorice at the best of times. As well as not liking the taste, I found that the mixture was very thick and sticky, which I was again not a fan of. After using this medicine though I may start to sign on to the theory of the worse it tastes the better it is for you!

This is definitely the best cough medicine I have ever used. You can really feel the medicine working as soon as you take it, as it seems to soothe the irritations causing the urge to cough and relieve the discomfort that a bad chesty cough can cause. I would definitely recommend this product for instant relief of a chesty cough. I didn't have a sore throat at the time, but the product states that it treats sore throats as well.

Children over 5 can take 1 5ml spoonful of this medicine, and children over 12 and adults can take 1 or 2. For this reason the medicine bottle lasts a long time. The labelling provides information on the potential side effects of the medicine and also cautions certain people against using the medication, for example people with heart complaints or stomach ulcers. As always, people who are pregnant or breast feeding should use this medicine with caution, and diabetics should also be aware of the high sugar content. One thing which I did notice is that this medicine actually has alcohol in it, which is the equivalent of 15ml of beer in a 10ml dose.

Summary: Definitely recommended for a cough that needs a bit of a kick
