While putting the finishing touches to my Christmas preparations on Christmas Eve, I started to feel a little achy and felt the on come of a headache. Christmas morning when I woke it was obvious that despite the fact that I had had a flu vaccination, I was well and truly infected with flu.

After having to make sudden emergency alterations to my planned day as I had invited a couple of the elderly folk I care for in my work for dinner (I hate to think of them being alone at Christmas) and flu can be fatal at their age, I took to my bed.

A good friend rang me on Boxing Day morning to ask how I was feeling, I told him I felt awful and went back to bed. An hour or so later he turned up at my house and gave me a paper bag full of medicines, he had kindly found the duty chemist and bought me a few things he hoped might help.

The bag contained; Lem-sip, a box of Tunes and a tall thin brown bottle with a white, red and mauve label, which had the name "Covonia" written in large white letters. As a rule when I buy cough mixture I usually buy "Benyln" but I wasn't going to seem ungrateful to my friend after all the trouble he had gone to and besides the way I was feeling I would have taken anything that might help me feel better.

The bottle contains150 ml and cost £2.85, the cough mixture contains Liquorice and Squill, which are expectorants and help to remove phlegm and menthol to help relieve congestion. You can take up to 10ml every four hours, It is advised you consult your Doctor or Pharmacist before taking if you are pregnant, breast feeding or taking water tablets for water retention.

I shook the bottle and opened the cap; despite having the flu and not being in full control of all my senses it still smelt awful, a so

and aniseed smell with a slight chemical whiff to it. I measured out the prescribed dose of the thin watery dark brown liquid and swallowed, well it tasted horrible like very strong Liquorice and it was quite hot.

I could feel it burning a little as it went down; it seemed to calm the tickle slightly almost instantly. After a couple of doses It seemed to loosen a little of the phlegm and enabled me to cough it up, making it a little easier to breath it also eased my sore throat quite noticeably.

Having Asthma I dread getting flu and cough's as they always go straight to my chest causing me no end of misery but this did seem to do the trick for me, it really does seem to work better in my opinion than my old favourite "Benyln" which I have sworn by for years.

Covonia cough mixture is available in most high street Chemists including Boots and many supermarkets too. The bottle I had stated that it was a none drowsy formula and I did not feel drowsy in the slightest.

All in all I would definitely recommend this cough mixture, now I have found it I shall be buying it in future as I feel it really did work for me, much better than the flu jab did. It's a bit odd but nearly all the people I know who have had the flu had the flu jab, while many that didn't are fine.

If you do get flu and I hope you don?t please give it a try, I think you will be glad you did, It's also cheaper than many other mixture.
