Advantages: can relieve pain and tenderness
Disadvantages: can burn or cause allergic reaction
I bought some Mentholatum deep heat rub last night, as I've been suffering with a bad back for a fornight now. I fell out of the bath hitting my neck and back on the radiator. Not the cleverest thing to do, I know.
Opposed to medication, I decided enough was enough and try out some over the ounter remedies. This I must ay is the first I have tried.
Deep heat rub provides fast relief for muscular aches and pains. Its active ingrediants are
menthol 5.91%
eucalyptus oil 1.97%
methyl salicylate 12.80%
turperntine oil B.P 1.47%
Allergy sufferers may find they have allergic reactions to the oil based ingrediants, so apply with caution. Better still, get advice from your GP or pharmacist before using this oitment.
The oitment is white in colour. The smell is strong of eucalyptus, and as soon as applied to the affected area, you'll begin to feel it working. I applied some to the back and side of my neck as well, and became quite scared when I started feeling claustropobic. The smell so close to my motuh was obviouslym making me feel this way. The sensation is rapid and intense. I can only describe it as a burning sensation.
The oitment is an analgesic. It works by penetrating warmth into the deep tissue, circulating blood, relaxing muscles and reoxygenating painful tissues.
Deep Heat rub is not suitable for children under 5 years. For adults and children over 5, apply 2-3 times a day.
A 35g tube costs £3.49 from Tesco.
Despite the initial anxiety I felt, I woke up this morning with no pain for approx 2 hours. It must have worked.
I do recommend deep heat rub, although be careful if you have broken skin. This is not suitable.
Summary: relieves aching muscles temporarily

- 12/09/05 It does work a treat for me but it's not exactly a subtle smell ! Lexy |

- 09/09/05 I tried this on a stiff neck once, and ended up feeling as if my skin was on fire. Now I use Olbus oil (which has lots of the same ingredients), which has more of a cold numbing effect. |
