Advantages: Heats up and helps soothe

Disadvantages: A bit smelly!

Ever since being a little girl I remember having a tube of deep heat in the medicine cabinet. My mum always used to use it for any aches and pains we had. Now that I have moved out and have my own flat, I still have a tube of this in my first aid essentials!

The cream comes in a red tube with a red plastic screw top cap. It is available to buy in a 100g size, which costs around £4.99. It is available at most pharmacies and at shops such as Boots, which have a pharmacy section. You don't need a prescription to buy the heat rub, and it is available to purchase over the counter.

The cream is for treating pains such as backache and sore muscles, but you can also apply it to bruises and chilblains. So it is quite versatile!

The cream itself is white in colour.. and it smells! It has a very medicated smell which lingers after you have applied it. The cream comes in a tube which you simply squeeze to get it out. Once you apply it, it heats up pretty much straight away. This helps with soothing your pains. The cream absorbs into the skin really quickly and I can feel it helping straight away once it has been applied.

The active ingredients in the cream are menthol, eucalyptus oil, methyl salicylate and turpentine oil.

The directions of use are to gently massage the cream into the affected area. (it is only for external use!) It is also advised that you wash your hands after applying the cream, I am sure that this is because it would not be too good if you were to touch your eyes or mouth whilst having this on you since it would really hurt, also the product does heat it up and it does smell, so you would want to wash this away. The good thing about it is that if you do have it on your fingers or your skin after you have applied the cream, and manage to get it on your clothes, the cream does not stain.

You should only apply a thin layer of this at a time. I did make the mistake once of smearing it on in a thick layer and it felt like my back was on fire and it really starting stinging! This doesn't happen normally if you apply it properly. It says on the tube that you can apply it 2 - 3 times a day.

I have found that this has always helped soothe any ache or pain I have had, and I would highly recommend this to anyone. I think that it is really great to use, especially if you do a lot of exercising or manual work where you may get muscle pains.

Summary: A great cream to help with sore muscles
