Advantages: Eases the muscular discomfort
Disadvantages: stings like hell if get into eyes
It would appear that when you get to a certain age, the old muscles and bones just ain't what they used to be. A slight knock is more painful and its subsequent healing longer. There are obvious remedies for the physical pain, but the muscular although benefiting from such painkillers sometimes just need a helping hand.
It has been known for a long time that heat causes an increase in the bodies capabilities to repair itself, I'm not a doctor, but apparently it stimulates blood flow which it turn increases all those lovely chemicals and stuff that do the actual repairing. Unfortunately it is not always possible just to jump into a nice hot bath, with some nice bubbles and scent, and just relax those pains away with the warmth from the water.
So what is to be done, well one possibility is to use one of the many cream formulas around which does just that. What aren't you listening, increase the blood flow by instigating some heat. Such a formula is Deep Heat. For those of you round about my age this remedy will be familiar with its bright red packaging and similar tube. It cost just over the £3 pound mark in most pharmacies, but it will help those aching muscles, or should I say distract you from the incurring pain.
Deep Heat is an emulsifier cream, which quickly absorbs into the skin and produces a fairly strong sensation of heat. It smells for all the world like old-fashioned bubble gum, and the smell lingers for ages. I'm not so convinced that it does actually perform any medical condition whereby the healing is speeded up, but the hot tingling feeling which is quite heartening will certainly be sufficiently hot to distract you from the muscular pain it is intended to relieve. It will feel hot for some considerable time, so night time just before bed might be considered the optimal time for application. The heat will in most cases not be enough to stop you nodding of, and then the natural healing process will kick in during normal sleep.
I'm in no way knocking Deep Heat it has worked for me in the past and on other occasions it has merely distracted, either way I was happy. I think it might be slightly overpriced, and there are other options available which perhaps in this day and age might be more suitable. I also think it depends on where the injury is located as to whether this product will perform or pretend. For £3 quid I reckon it is worth a bash if you are suffering from any muscular aches and pains, just one very important thing before I finish. Keep it well away from your eyes and don't rub your eyes with the hand used to apply the cream until you have washed it several times, or lo and behold you will suffer real pain.
Summary: A good product which does give some relief
