Advantages: Soothes Aching Muscles
Disadvantages: Potent Smell
I was at work recently and unfortunately managed to hurt my shoulder by lifting a box which turned out to be much heavier than I had first thought it would be. Well needless to say it was a niggly and extremely uncomfortable injury that just would not go away. I was examined by occupational health and being reassured that it wasn't anything too serious I comforted myself with the knowledge that in a few days and with the help of my old friend the deep heat rub I knew that I would be as right as rain.
Deep heat rub is a miracle of modern medicine in my eyes. Produced by the Mentholatum Co. Ltd it is a cream or ointment if you prefer which contains analgesic properties and can be effective in treating muscular aches and pains. I had a look on the company website to find out some more information on the product as an aid to researching for this review and discovered that applying deep heat to injured joints or muscles can actually relax the muscles, reduce stiffness and relieve pain and in addition improves the blood supply to the affected area and ultimately aids in the healing process.
It comes packaged in a fiery red box which states that it is in fact the rub or cream version of this product. There are several variations so be sure that you pick up the product that will best suit your needs, for example there are sprays, patches, creams and a bath tonic. All items in this range are in the distinctive packaging and are all designed to heal the same kind of ailments. It is just a matter of deciding which variation of the range will suit you best. The rub comes in a variety of sizes the item I purchased was a 35g tube which cost £1.95 at Superdrug. You can also buy larger sizes in 67g and 100g tubes unfortunately I cannot comment regarding the price of these larger sizes.
This product is a hot topical treatment that works with the bodies natural enzymes which generates warmth to get to the source of pain and discomfort. A topical treatment is one that is applied directly to the part of the body where the discomfort is felt. In my case my sore shoulder. Application is extremely easy you squeeze a small amount of the rub into the palm of your hand and then massage it gently all over the affected part of the body. This can be done up to three times a day if required. Within a matter of a few seconds you will feel the treatment begin to work. Some of its active ingredients include Menthol, Eucalyptus oil, Lanolin and Turpentine to name but a few so as you can imagine it is quite potent stuff.
This product should not be used if the affected area has broken skin or on sensitive areas. Contact with the eyes must be avoided and hands should be thoroughly washed after application. The product should not be used on children under the age of 5 years either. The use of the rub should be discontinued if there is excessive irritation or if any other adverse affects occur. Finally it should be used externally only!!!!
I would state at this point that I would not advocate the use of this product by everyone. I suffer from a lot of allergies and the smell of this cream alone is enough to start me off sneezing uncontrollably (pleasant it is definitely not!!!) however the therapeutic benefits by far outweigh this minor irritation so I tend to perservere with this treatment. After a few seconds of applying the cream you can feel it working and it can often feel a little uncomfortable its almost as if you have had some sort of allergic reaction as your skin feels as if it is inflamed and hot. This believe it or not is a sign that the product is actually working. It does die down after a few minutes and you do feel as if it has worked as in my case the shoulder pain became more bearable. It eventually becomes quite warm and comfortable and feels quite relaxing. After using it for a few days and of course as a result of the bodies own ability to be able to heal itself my shoulder was pain-free. The manufacturers also suggest its use in the treatment of rheumatic pain, sciatica, lumbago and for the treatment of minor sports injuries before and after exercise. I would definitely recommend this product for the treatment of muscular aches and pains. As once you get over the initial shock of using it for the first time and gradually feel the benefits you will always have a tube of it to hand. Bear in mind also that it is probably wise to use it in the house only as its distinctive fragrance hangs about for hours. An ideal product for your household first aid kit.
