Advantages: Works fast and is effective

Disadvantages: leaves mouth feeling numb like you have been to the dentist

My sore throat has continued and unfortunately decided to turn into a nasty chest infection so I am now taking some antibiotics having visited the doctors this morning. Previous to it turning into this infection I had just popped on to my local Lloyds pharmacy; as I had run out of strepsils so needed something a little more powerful to ease the discomfort of my sore throat. I asked for a box of Dequacaine lozenges and the young girl behind the counter proceeded to scan a box of Immodium! I explained she had got the wrong item and after her picking up 4 other very different items she eventually picked the right one (I was practically screaming and pointing at the box like a mad woman by this point though!).

So what are they?~
Dequacaine are lozenges aimed at soothing severe sore throats. They are have a very strong numbing effect and make strepsils seem like jelly tots in comparison.
The main active ingredients are Benzocaine (10mg) and Dequalinium Chloride (0.25mg). That may as well be written in japanese as I have absolutely no idea what they are, but I know they work and that's good enough for me!

Price and packaging~
The packaging is nothing too eye catching - a small white box (similar size to Strepsils) with shades of red on one side and the logo in blue and red lettering. There are 24 lozenges inside and come in two foil blisters cointaining 12 each. The lozenge itself is about a centremetre in diameter (same size as..yes you guessed it a strepsil!) and are a lemony/white colour. These are quite reasonable to buy as they are normally under £3.50 in most of the chemists I have bought them in, and this particular pack was a bargain £3.26.

How to take~
Suck one lozenge slowly every two hours, or as needed. Do not take more than 8 in a 24 hour period. On opening the box and popping out a lozenge from the blister pack there is a distinctive medicinal smell that is quite strong. That's nothing compared to when you actually get one of these in your mouth..your tongue, mouth and throat goes numb almost instantly!

My thoughts~
These are very effective when you have a sore throat as they are very strong and certainly do take the edge of even the sorest of throats. I find that after one has dissolved in your mouth the numbing feeling tends to last for at least 20 to 30 minutes later which is good (well it does on me anyway).
If you suffer from severe sore throats these are worth their weight in gold. No they don't take it away completely as do any pastilles or lozenges (though these contain local anaesthetic and an anti-bacterial agent).

The usual applies here with if symptoms persist see your doctor, consult a doctor also if you are pregnant/breast feeding etc.

5 pain numbing stars from me!

Summary: fantastic to carry in your bag if suffering with a sore throat

I used to use the ones before these - Dequadin I think they were called. Nice tasting sweets as well! Not sure if I've tried these yet, my mum holds onto all kinds of medication so I probably have!

I think these are fantastic as they really do work. I have asthma so in winter if I get a sore throat it can be very painful when I have to cough and these are the only thing that works.
