Advantages: has antiseptic, works fast, clears with 2/3 days

Disadvantages: taste nice, kids think they could be sweets

After all the gluttony of Christmas and the chocolates that we all scoffed, now comes the harsh weather of January and February, colds, flus, soar throats, coughs, chest infections, what a lovely thought eh. I found this product quite by accident as I had always used strepsils which now I am on my third packet of these for the colds and throats I have had since Christmas and they work every time and seem to settle things down with 2/3 days.

After all the rushing around today, I think I have picked up a bug or something. I wish people would not come and visit us when they have throats or colds or anything as all I have to do is be in the same room as some one for about 1 second and the following day I will come out with the symptoms.

Mum gladly passed this on to me and said it is her Easter Pressie to me and started to laugh. I can feel my throat coming up so today when I was Shopping, I popped into Superdrug and asked them for the best thing they could give me, they asked me how much do you want to spend.

The reply was I don't care, it is on its way and it needs to be sorted and quick. She offered me something called Dequacain which is something that I have never heard of.

The cost was £2.59 and after commenting on how nice my perfume was I totted off on my way.

The Packaging
============
5 inches by 3 inches predominantly white car board box with the words Dequacaine written in red and black on the front. It says it is for severe soar throats.

In very small writing it states it is containing Benzocaine and Dequalinium chloride and that it is a local anaesthetic and numbs throat pain with works together with an anti-bacterial agent which attacks soar throats.

It also states that it has 24 lozenges.

On the back there are directions and some useful advice which I will go into later and also customer service details.

The Lozenge
==========

When you ope
n the box there is two strips of plastic and metal foiled fronts and back and you pop them out. The sweets are milky coloured about the size of a penny.

Each strip holds 12 lozenges. You take one lozenge and suck it to death and within seconds it releases a anaesthetic and believe me they work straight away. At this very moment I am sucking one and my tongue and throat is numb.

They are very pleasant tasting and it does leave a funny but not horrible after taste in your mouth. The tablets take about 5 mins to disappear.

The effects I find last about 30mins before I can feel my throat coming back with vengeance but they do work in the short term.

How to use
=========
Read the carton on the back before taking anything.

These are only for people over the age of 12 years old.

Suck one lozenge every 2 hours not taking more than 8 in any 24 hour period.

Do not take if
===========
You are under 12.
Have any allergies to the ingredients.
If you are diabetic, do not just presume they are ok.
If you have blood disorders.

Check before use if
================
You are diabetic, you can have them but check with doctor or pharmacist first.
If you are pregnant.
If you have a condition called myasthenia gravis.

Side Effects
==========
Occasionally with any products there are people who are allergic to them and also very rarely their is a blood disorder you can get which gives a blue tinge to you lips and nails.

The Ingredients are listed as they are important to this opinion
======================================
Benzocaine ph Eur 10mg
Dequalinium Chloride BP .25mg
Contains different sugars, such as glucose, sucrose, syrups.
Each Lozenge contains 2.2g of sugars
Benzyl Alcohol may cause allergic reactions.

My Own Warnings
==============
Keep out of reach of Children, locked away not just out of reach as
these taste quite pleasant and could be mistaken for sweets. Whilst writing this opinion, several times I have had to refrain from calling them sweets.

Be careful of drinking straight afterwards as a cold drink will taste awful and a hot drink could burn your mouth.

Would I recommend them?
======================
Yes certainly I would as they do work for short periods of time and I would definatley buy them again. The only comment I would make to the supplier is that it would be easier to do 3 strips of 8 so that I can keep a check on how many I have taken quite easily.

Where and how much are they?
=========================
As I said I bought these from Superdrug, for £2.59 but they are readily available at most chemists. They are bought over the counter.

**** Now with all illnesses and drugs, this is my opinion only, what suits me might not suit you so check with doctor or pharmacist before taking anything like this ******

Expiry Date
=========
On this product it is two years in 2005. The date is on the opening end of the box and is quite hard to see as it is only impressed on the lid and not in a different colour.

Hope this is of help to anyone, Karen xxxx
