Folic acid - why buy this one and why buy it at all?!

Well this brand of folic acid was bought from an online supermarket. It was cheap (£1.99 for 90 tabs). This is the first important step with this type of tablet. Current recommedations are that any potential mothers shop start taking them when they start trying for a baby - not necessarily when they become pregnant. Thereafter you have to take them for the first trimester (12 weeks) of the pregnancy. So at a minimum you'll go through 1 pack of these. As the worst, you could be trying for a year to conceive and go through at least 4 bottles of these tablets before you could stop.

Therefore the tablets themselves should be tasteless and small - these certainly are. Trying to remember to take them wasn't too bad - the bottle is descrete enough that it can be left on your dresser without looking out of place but with a label bright enough to catch your eye to remind you to take them!

I found that there was no after taste with these tablets either. In addition, I experienced no side effects either like tummy upset or reflux.

The product should be taken with some orange juice to maximise the absorption and to avoid taking it with dairy prodcts. Therefore, as most people have milk or similar for breakfast I actually ended up taking these tablets at night. It's still as effective and I still remembered to take them!

If you forget to take them then just take it the next day. Your baby will not have neural tube defects for forgetting to take it one day but overdosing lots of days just encase you forgot it probably worse.
