“ELIMINATES HEAD LICE AND THEIR EGGS”
After years of teaching and watching these little creatures crawl about children’s heads while they (the children), scratch uncontrollably, I am ever prepared for the onslaught of the head lice. With this in mind, my hair is always tied back and I try very hard not to go “head to head”. My two boys managed to get them once each, probably because they had very short hair, but Little Miss has managed to get head lice within 3 months of being at school.
Normal day, come home to see her writhing at her head and yes, there was the little army…small but definitely there. I was expecting it because the letter had come from school, but once it was verified, we became the scratching family!
At the chemist, I made a bid to buy everything on offer to solve this problem, and then tried to explain to a four year old that there are little creatures who won’t bite but will itch, and we are going to put on some special lotion to make them go away (hopefully). EEK!! No matter how many times I see head lice they never fail to make me go completely squirmy and pathetic.
This is the solution which the chemist advised me to buy and one which I have used on three occasions now, and it has worked every time.
**The Packaging**
The lotion is in a clear plastic 100ml bottle which comes in its own box, with advise on the front and side and a picture of a smiling child; why not a head louse?? This same advise and instructions is on the bottle, presumably in case you lose the box and the instructions and are left with a plastic bottle.
With this bottle of lotion, you also get a special metal comb, which is very short, small and strong, and just right for dragging those eggs from your head.
**The Lotion**
This is quite misleading, because I expected a lotion rather like conditioner, but it is more like an oily liquid. The good thing about it is that it is just about odourless, unlike some products which scream “I have head lice!” So there you have it, a clear, almost odourless solution, ready to make you scratch free and no longer the free bed and breakfast place for the local homeless.
**How to delouse**
Open the box and there are the instructions. They firstly give a little bit of information about lice but at the moment I don’t really want to know that the itch is caused by lice saliva, I want them OFF!!
So, in 3 easy stages:
1. Comb dry hair with a normal comb, apply the solution and massage thoroughly, ensuring the whole head is covered
2. After 10 minutes, comb through your hair using the special comb and when this is done, wash out the solution using a non conditioning shampoo.
3. After 7 days, have another look, and if there are still live lice wandering about your head, repeat the treatment all over again
**Warnings**
1. use only if you have seen a live louse, not on speculation
2. If you experience sensitivity to the product consult your pharmasist
3. Keep bottle away from direct sunlight
4. If spilt, the lotion can make floors slippy
5. Can stain clothes, although by this stage, I don’t care!!
**Who can use it?**
Adults and children over the age of 2 years
**What does it contain?**
Cyclomethicone and isopropyl myristate
**Producer**
SSL International plc
Venus,
Trafford Park
Manchester
** Did it work?**
This is an easy one, and not open to anything other than complete objectivity. I followed the instructions to the letter, and 7 days later, not a pesky pest remained in sight, so just to be on the safe side I used another product which does not involve the rather horrendous viewing of the louse.
To be on the safe side, I did the whole family, and fumigated the house, and so far so good (fingers crossed, touch wood and all that jazz!)
It is really easy to use and after it has been left on for 10 minutes, the hair combs through quite easily, which is a blessing, because those metal combs do hurt
Because it is almost odourless, we managed not to walk around smelling of treatment products and it was almost possible to convince myself that it was a normal shampoo or conditioner which just has to be left on for a long time. The solution has been dermatologically tested and if it does accidentally go in your eyes, there is none of that awful sting, which is a great thing because it’s often children who need to use it first.
So…with a little one at school and me in the classroom, this is one product I am going to make sure I keep a supply of in the house. Hopefully, our lice won’t become immune to it, and more hopefully, I don’t have to use it for a while.
Children… bringing joy, hard work and lice.
Thanks for reading.

- 16/01/06 This is a great review. Nits seem to be a bigger problem than ever in our schools, but at least it is talked about more freely these days. |

- 15/01/06 I'm going to have to look into this, kids always bring them back from school - at least once a term... I reckon they just sit in a circle of heads deliberately! |
