Full Marks Head Lice Solution
Advantages: kills eggs and nits, without harsh pesticides, works in 10 minutes.
Disadvantages: very oily, runs off your head.
The first time they got nits, my husband was away working, and I discovered this about 3pm on a Sunday afternoon. I rang my sister as I knew she was out shopping, and asked her to pick me something up, and she brough me 2 bottles of this full marks solution. We then sat and treat my two and her lad together.
At that particular time, both my boys were absolutely lousy, I had been a bit naive and not been checking over half term, and by the time I noticed we had quite a big problem. The solution came in a 100ml bottle with a pointy nozzle end like a hair dye bottle. It was really easy to squeeze some of the solution out along the scalp before making sure that it was rubbed into the boys heads covering the scalp completely.
Both my two had different difficult spots to treat. My youngest has a double crown in his hair, and his hair is really thick. My eldest has an indent in the back of his head at the base of the skull, and it was really tricky to get the comb into this area. Nits of course seem to have a 6th sense of where to go to avoid detection.
The first time I used this, I was grateful to my sister for getting it for me, but I didn't really enjoy using it. The solution is scent free thankfully which is much better than remedies from when we were kids, but it was really oily and runny, and the way my sister applied it she somehow got it everywhere. I sat the kids on a large sheet of white paper from a craft roll, but there were splashes of it ending up everywhere.
It was quite quick to use as you just comb through the childs hair to make sure it is not knotty, then apply almost like you would a shampoo by covering the scalp and rubbing it in. You then leave it 10 minutes before you can comb through the hair and remove any debris. The box I purchased came with a handy little fine toothed comb in the box which was great at pulling stuff out of the kids hair. This also kills eggs, so you are hopefully eliminating the problem if you use this solution.
The first time, I found that this was not that great at removing some of the smaller nits from the hair during the treatment. It could have been more the kids were fidgety and fed up, and it was hard work dealing with both of them at the same time, but I had to spend the next day with my sons sat with their head covered in conditioner, and that was how I cleared their hair. I also found that the next weekend, my youngest who had been worst affected was lousy again. I felt at the time maybe I had missed something, though he was back at school by this point so maybe he got re-infested.
This latest outbreak, I decided I would just try and comb out what I could as I had no treatment in again at the time. I found initially the hair looked clear, after using conditioner, but the next day there were more in. I tried olive oil then, which also was good for getting the beasties out, but we still had a problem, so I eventually relented and bought some more of this. It was £4.99 for a 100ml bottle from a local shop. This time I applied it a bit more sensibly, and although it was still runny and very oily, I could contain it by making my son sit still and dabbing at the dribbles as they ran off his head. I was trying to avoid it getting in his eyes.
The best thing about this solution is it is very easy to wash out when you are ready, and I just shampoo'd my sons head as I normally would. I didn't have to repeat the process.
So, my overall impression is that I don't really like using this, I still think it is not the best way of pulling all the debris out the hair, but it does kill everything so nothing is moving and it is easier to clear. I found that two bottles treated my 2 sons, my nephew, my husband and myself. A little goes quite far with this one. Most went on my shoulder length thick hair. My hair was not left in bad condition by this treatment, though it was rather frizzy after all my paranoid combing through. It is certainly a big improvement on the old fashioned lotions as it is scent free and works in a shorter time scale without the use of harsh pesticides.
I had to laugh at the health warnings on the pack, of keeping hair away from naked flames and heat sources while using this, and to not smoke. I guess you might think it a good idea to blast your hair with the hairdryer, but this is so oily I wouldn't want to be doing anything else while waiting 10 minutes for it to do its thing.
Summary: Not the most pleasant ten minutes you will spend, but it works which is the main thing.
