Advantages: Works Quickly
Disadvantages: No Safety Cap
Gaviscon is a medicine designed to bring relief from indigestion and heartburn.
Luckily, I don't often get indigestion, but we all know that it can be an incredibly uncomfortable experience. I have found Gaviscon extremely effective as it seems to sooth the pain almost instantly. It does this with its combination of active ingredients alginic acid and bicarbonate, which create a barrier that prevents stomach acid from refluxing back up into the esophagus - nice!.
The bottle size I generally buy is the 300ml version, which comes in Aniseed or Peppermint flavours, costing £5 from Tesco. I find the taste of both varieties to be quite pleasant, and don't have a preference for either.
In terms of the dosage, it is recommended to take two to four 5ml spoonfuls for adults and children over twelve. For children aged six to twelve, just one spoonful is recommended - however, the product is unsuitable for those under six.
On the downside, the bottle doesn't feature a safety cap, so youngsters may be able to open the product a little too easily. I'm not sure what the result would be of downing a whole bottle of the stuff - but I doubt it would be too good for a child.
In my personal experience I haven't had any side effects after consuming Gaviscon, although the bottle does suggest that there may be a very slight possibility of skin rashes after use.
I highly recommend Gaviscon as an effective an instant treatment for acid indigestion. If you're a persistent sufferer then I recommend giving this wonder-liquid a go.
Summary: Excellent Relief From Indigestion.
