Advantages: It works

Disadvantages: A bit pricey

It seems quite amusing writing a review for a heartburn and indigestion remedy following on from one about condensed milk and fudge making! I promise the two aren't linked, condensed milk has in no way given me indigestion.

I don't suffer from heartburn very often, but when I do it is just awful. I pity anyone who suffers from this on a regular basis. The first time I had it I was convinced I was having a heart attack, I could barely breathe for the pain. My Grandmother had had a hiatus hernia and had often used gaviscon to relieve heartburn and indigestion so I gave it a go. It works brilliantly. I never go on holiday without taking a bottle with me.

There are a number of different types of gaviscon in the range. Some are mint flavoured and some are aniseed. The remedy I have found to be best is Gaviscon Double Action. This works in two ways by neutralising the stomach acid to relieve the pain, and then forming a protective barrier over the stomach contents to stop the burning pain in your chest. Heartburn is literally excess stomach acid rising into your chest and throat, so this double action formula makes real sense.

Gaviscon liquid comes in a bottle, various sizes are available. The one I have is 300ml and cost around £6.00. Not cheap, but worth every penny if you are suffering. The liquid itself is quite thick and slightly pink in colour. It is a bit chalky and this can be a bit unpleasant, but the mint flavour is quite nice and fresh.

Gaviscon can be given to adults and children over 12 years. It contains sodium bicarbonate, sodium alginate and calcium carbonate. It is sugar free and gluten free.

I would not hesitate to recommend Gaviscon as a remedy for heartburn.

Summary: Relief in a jiffy.
