When I am pregnant I always suffer with very bad heartburn and when in my last pregnancy it got so bad that I was literally just eating the heartburn tablets like sweets I knew I needed something stronger. I went to see my doctor who prescribed me Gaviscon Advance, I was getting 500ml bottles from my doctor which was great for me as a 150ml bottle sets you back about £5 in shops.

The product comes in two different flavours, aniseed which I hated and peppermint which I found was a little better and so I stuck with the peppermint flavour. The product comes in a brown glass bottle with a white screw top lid which I was quite suprised ton find isn't childproof. On the bottle it states,

"provides fast, soothing and long lasting relief from the pain and discomfort of heartburn and acid indegestion"

The label on the bottle gives alot of information so I will try and give you what I think important,

10ml of product contains sodium alginate Ph Eur 1000mg and potassium hydrogen carbonate Ph Eur 200mg,
To use shake the bottle and take 5-10mls of the product, this can be used by adults and children over 12,
Do not refrigerate,
Use within 6 months of opening

On opening the bottle you can smell the mint flavouring but it has a powdery smell to it too, the liquid is very thick in consistancy and is easy to administer as it stays put on the spoon. I really didn't think much of the actual liquid as it was so thick and the feel of it in my mouth made me gag but I had to take it as I needed to the relief. The medicine works very well, I was instructed to take this as and when required and I found generally that I would have to take it after meals and sometimes through the night when I would wake up with heartnburn. Considering how many heartburn tablets I had been taking I think 4 to 5 doses of this per day was a great improvment and shows that the product does have a long lasting effect.

I would have preferred not to have to take this as the feeling of it in my mouth and swallowing it I did not like however it is a very good product which dealt with my heartburn very quickly and kept it at bay for a few hours at a time, i'm not sure how I would have got through the pregnancy without this.
