Advantages: instant relief

Disadvantages: expensive

Gaviscon is indispensable in my medicine cupboard. Most spicey foods, acidy drinks, or even my favourite chocolates can start an attack of acid indigestion. The sharp stinging pain just gets worse until it is treated effectively.

Sometimes this is a mild burning in the chest which is quickly relieved by a couple of teaspoons of the liquid but at times it it reaches raging inferno proportions and the sharp pain in chest and stomach gets unbearable. Out comes the Gaviscon Advance.

I have tried a whole range of antacids at varying prices but I must admit that this is the most effective in my case.

It is expensive at almost two pounds for 8 tablets, or around five pounds for a 250mls bottle of the liquid. However, it is worth it. If I purchase other antacids I find I have to take repeat doses and then I only get partial relief. Cost wise this probably works out the same in the long run.

Gaviscon contains sodium alginate and potassium bicarbonate which neutralise the acid instantly. It is recommended for the treatment of acid reflux, hiatus hernia, wind, indigestion and many other complaints of the digestive system. It is made by Reckit and Coleman who also make Rennie.

The taste of Gaviscon Advance is not as bad as some of the other more chalky tasting remedies for acid indigestion. It is thick, with the consistency of thick pouring custard and white. It tastes of aniseed and peppermint mixed. Personally I don't mind the taste although I must admit that once that pain starts I don't really care what the remedy tastes like. You take 2 times 5ml spoonfuls per dose and relief is usually instant.

It is expensive but I think its worth it for such instant and lasting relief. I'm sure that if you have ever suffered the pain caused by stomach acid, you will agree that if it works its fine, regardless of price, or taste.

I don't often have need of it, but when I do this is the best antacid, without doubt! Kim :-)
