Advantages: Relieves the pain of heartburn, more discreet than swigging from a large bottle

Disadvantages: Not Gaviscon Advance, works out expensive compared to the price of bottles

At seven months pregnant I'm at the stage of swigging Gaviscon straight out of the bottle, it does become an addiction so when I ran out a few evenings ago I was devestated! Not to mention the heartburn decided to choose that night to come back with a vengeance.

Mark is always very good when I'm up the duff (shame I haven't had the gestation period of an elephant!) and like a good 'un he went to Tesco and came back with a box of these mint flavoured Gaviscon sachets. I would have bought the bottled version but the tight-fisted git in him went for this cheaper option.

You get 12 single dose sachets of Gaviscon in a box, these might or might not last me for 48 hours so it's definitely a false economy to spend £3 on them when a bottle which lasts a week costs £8.49. Or free for pregnant ladies on prescription.

The sachets can be easily ripped open and poured straight into your mouth. They don't feel like a full dose to me but that's because I swig straight out of the bottle so like to get a good old mouthful each time. I was quite disappointed that this is the standard Gaviscon, not the Advanced version that I've got used to. The main difference is that the Gaviscon is quite a lot thinner, this makes it less effective than Gaviscon Advance in my opinion although it does help with my heartburn the relief doesn't last as long.

I like the cool mint flavour of them, I have been receiving the Aniseed Gaviscon Advance on prescription so it was a nice change to have these mint sachets. The flavour is very cooling and I think it's this which provides the first glimmer of relief, and heartburn is such a horrible pain that it's important for any medication to work as quickly as possible.

As I said, this doesn't work as quickly as Gaviscon Advance. The burn does recede quite fast, but it always feels there whereas the Advance bottled version will completely get rid of heartburn and acid indigestion within a minute of swallowing it.

These sachets are good for when you are out and about, to be honest they're no better for me as I'm not bothered about lugging my big bottle of Gaviscon around and don't feel even a twinge of embarrassment about swigging from it when I need some! For all you self concious types though, these sachets save you having to do this and are a lot more discreet. Although you may look like you're swallowing a wrap of speed, but the choice is yours.

£3.29 from Tesco.

Summary: A good idea, but will end up costing you more and doesn't work as well as the bottled version
