Gaviscon Peppermint Liquid Relief
Advantages: works quickly, long shelf life,
Disadvantages: Tastes Awful
It is very rare that I suffer with heartburn or indigestion, and this is something I am very thankful for. Some members of my family, including my Nan, get these problems quite often, so there is usually a stock of Gaviscon Liquid in a kitchen some where in my family.
I was at my Nans house once when I had a problem with some heartburn, and my Nan being the family pharmacist, immediatley pulled out the Gaviscon Peppermint for me. I had not tried it before, and I am not a huge fan of peppermint flavour, so I was a bit dubious to try it, but my Nan was insistent!
The Gaviscon is a thick, creamy texture, which is a slightly off white colour. You can smell the peppermint straight away, and it is quite a strong smell. As soon as I put some of this in my mouth, I was hit by the taste of it, and it is much stronger than it smells.
I was put off by the taste straight away, but had to swallow it. I did find it calmed the heartburn some what, but I could still taste the Gaviscon for about an hour afterwards. The results were good though, as it calmed the burning for a good while, and by the time the taste was gone, there was still no heartburn, so the taste is almost worth the results. The Gaviscon worked to calm the burn in about 10 - 15 minutes, which I thought was quite quick, but the taste made me feel sick, so a bit of swings and roundabouts it would seem for me.
I am lucky for the fact I do not get heartburn and indigestion very often, so I do not have to endure the horrible taste that comes along with it. My Nan swears by this stuff, as she suffers with heartburn quite often, as does my Aunt, and my Sister went through quite a lot of it when she was pregnant, as it was the only thing that calmed down the burning she felt.
I have to admit this stuff does work really well, but the taste is just disgusting. It does come in an Aniseed flavour too, which I also tried, but this does not fare well with me either. If you like either of the tastes, and you suffer from heartburn and indigestion, then this may well be the perfect product for you, but sadly for me, this product is not to be.
My Nan uses this about 2 - 4 times a week, and she says one bottle will last her a couple of months, so it can be good value for money, especially if you do not suffer with these problems very often. It has a very long shelf life, so you can keep it in the kitchen cupboard for some time, just in case you get a problem at some time.
You can get this on prescription, or you can buy it from Boots, Superdrugs and Other Pharmacies. You may also be able to buy it in some larger supermarkets, especially those which have a pharmacy in store.
I give this product a 4 out of 5 stars, as it does a great job in calming down the burn, and in quite a quick time, but the taste is just something I can not deal with.
