Advantages: A fruit packed with Vitamin C

Disadvantages: none

Years ago a half a grapefruit with a cherry stuck in the middle used to be a very popular `starter` for a meal, much like Black Forest Gateau used to be the pudding of the moment too!
I still buy fresh grapefruit, OK they are fussy to prepare and take time to eat but they are packed with Vitamin C and if you eat a half a grapefruit for breakfast it`s a good start to the day.
I have got a grapefruit knife, so when I cut my fruit in half the special knife helps me to loosen the segments so that it is much easier to eat, I have to have a sprinkling of sugar on them, much too sharp for me otherwise. But the Ruby grapefruit...that is the one with the very `pinky` skin is much sweeter to start off with.

So why eat Grapefruit?
As I have said they are packed with Vitamin C and this vitamin supports the immune system. Foods that are enriched with Vit C help ward off colds, help prevent Free Radical damage and promote cardiovascular health.
The pink grapefruit colour is down to Lycopene being contained within them and Lycopene seems to have an Anti-tumour activity.
A grapefruit is a good source of calcium, minerals, folate and iron and they are high in fibre yet low in calories.
If you are using prescribed medication you must check out with your GP if it is OK for you to eat grapefruit, some forms of medication can cause an interaction.
The USA accounts for nearly a half of Global production, around 60% of fresh grapefruit is used for canning and juicing while the remainder is sold fresh.

Holistic healing has many uses for the humble grapefruit, Grapefruit Oil can help the nervous system, Pink Grapefruit oil can be rubbed onto the palms of your hands and then inhaled, this apparently acts as an appetite suppressant.
Diluted grapefruit seed oil is used as a throat gargle or for gum infections, it can also be applied to warts, acne or skin irritations.
The oil can be bought at Holland and Barrett stores.

Grapefruit wine is made by many and if you take a look on the Internet there are plenty of recipes that use the tangy fruit.
You can buy a `Tala` cookware grapefruit knife for as little as £4 from the Amazon website.

Where I buy my grapefruit depends on which supermarket I visit on the day, if im looking for the ideal fruit then I would at first feel the weight of the grapefruit, this indicates how juicy it will be inside, the heavier the juicier. I also take note of the skin, I prefer the skins to be thinner, some fruits have really thick skins and very little grapefruit, so watch out.
A fresh grapefruit will cost you around 49p, so not bad value at all. A small tin of Grapefruit segments costs around 38p, cheaper but for me not so desirable.
Sainsbury`s Grapefruit juice is 86p a litre and don't forget you can also get Grapefruit squash and Lemon and Grapefruit teabags.

My Granny used to eat Grapefruit every day but she peeled them like an orange and ate the segments, it made me cringe!
I think money on a Grapefruit is money well spent.

Summary: A fruit packed with vitamins and minerals

I do quite like grapefruit. I have to say, this is an odd category for health - one could argue for loads of 'healthy' foods to go here if you admit grapefruit! Must enquire as to the reasoning behind this one ;)
