Advantages: Great for you!
Disadvantages: Nasty taste
There are very few fruits I hate the taste of, but grapefruit is one of them. It's just so sour! I feel like I may as well just eat a whole lemon and be done with it - at least the skin isn't as tough to get through!
However, I wish I did like grapefruit because its fresh juice is matched only by cranberry in terms of the good it can do your body, and when I got nuritional advice a couple of summers ago, the woman recommended it as a regular part of a good diet. Unfortunately buying it is just a waste of money for me as I'd make as many excuses as possible to avoid it! Another reason why I don't really buy fresh grapefruit is because it's so heavy - it sounds silly but it's true.
Grapefruits come in large sizes, so half is considered a good size portion. Most people scoop out the flesh and eat it with a spoon rather than peeling it. I personally find it more manageable in tins, especially mixed with other fruit so it's not as noticeable. Del Monte do what they call a 'Breakfast Mix' of fruit which also contains oranges I think. Obviously this isn't as good for you but better than nothing!
There are two common varieties of grapefruit - pink and yellow. Yellow is by far the most common and pink is considered more of a luxury. The pink is slightly better in my opinion because it's not quite as sour - however it still shares the same bitter aftertaste as the yellow.
Summary: If you can stomach it it's a good thing to buy

- 29/12/08 Wow. I really found this hard to rate, as (not your fault) it's a silly topic for health. I'm thinking it's meant as a therapy (though what kind of therapy, I cannot begin to imagine) rather than how to eat a grapefruit.
Um ...sorry that I can't rate higher, but though you've put thought into this, it's not really going to help a consumer decide whether to use a grapefruit as a health food or treatment.
