Advantages: Help sore throats and stuffy noses, taste great
Disadvantages: Relief is short lived
My cold continues. I am currently working my way through a huge pile of Soothers, Tunes, and the subject of this review: Halls Mentho-lyptus sweets. Of the three throat sweets mentioned, these are probably the best.
These sweets come in a quite funky looking packet which is a shiny, metallic silver and red colour. It contains 9 sweets and costs 35 pence from most supermarkets or pharmacies. Each sweet is individually wrapped and is a red colour.
These lozenges are supposed to provide relief for 'blocked nose, head colds, chestiness and sore throats' according to the packet. The active ingredients are Menthol and Eucalyptus Oil.
The usage instructions are to dissolve one sweet slowly in the mouth. Adults should not exceed 4 packs in 24 hours, children over 6 should not exceed 3 and those under 6 should not exceed 1.
The sweets taste lovely! They are quite strong and have a cherry flavour akin to Cherry Drops, mixed with a very slight menthol taste which makes my tongue go a little tingly. They are so yummy that I tend to end up crunching them instead of sucking them, as I want to eat them! However this seems to work as well as sucking them, so it's not a problem.
The lozenges are really effective. They numb my throat and provide a bit of relief from pain, though it is short lived like most throat sweets. They also make a difference to my sinuses. I suppose this is the menthol working. It makes my stuffy nose feel a bit clearer, which is great. I think they are the most effective of the sweets I have tried to help with this cold and they are the ones I shall turn to first in future.
These do have some side effects. If taken in large qualities they can act as a laxative. The packet also warns that in rare cases they can cause skin irritation, flushing or headaches. If you experience any of these things you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist. It's also worth saying that these sweets do contain aspartame, so don't buy them if you try to avoid that.
Summary: A sweet way to help your cold
