Advantages: good for soothing

Disadvantages: sugar content

Its getting to the time of year when the coughs and colds are spreading around. My daughter came out in a dreadful cold. She was complaining of a sore throat and cough. She does not like taking medication so we went to te supermarket to stock up with cold essentials. Along with the balm tissues and olbas she picked up a packet of Halls Soothers. The flavour that she chose was blackcurrant. (they do come in other flavours peach and raspberry, strawberry and cherry)

They are packaged in a purple packet. In eack pack you get about 10 of the sweets. They are all individually wrapped in a white wrapper which is easy to remove.

The soothers are basically blackcurrant flavour boiled sweets with a liquid centre which is made with real fruit juice. when you unwrap the sweet you can smell the blackcurrant smell. The sweet is very pleasant in taste a mild blackcurrant flavour. They are not too strong tasting as some sweets do. After sucking for a while the soft liquid centre is released. This is a very nice sweet blackcurrant liquid. My daughter found the centre to soothe her throat it also stopped her coughing for a short while.

I think these sweets are good if you are unable to eat or do not feel like eating because they contain alot of sugar so will give you some energy. However the downside is that they are not so good for your teeth. They do contain menthol and eucalyptus oil. These sweets are good for a mild sore throat as they do soothe it for a while. For a bad sore throat the medicated sweets would do a better job.

The sweets come in a 45g packet.

They are quite expensive and cost 48p.

They are available from supermarkets (found around the pharmacy area) and chemists.

Summary: pleasant tasting sweets

I find that if I eat too many I can get the runs. I thought they contained sorbitol as a result.
