Advantages: Nice flavours, soothe nicely whilst eating them

Disadvantages: Not a long lasting effect so end up eating a lot of them

Last night, in the middle of a telephone conversation with a friend, my voice suddenly started to go, there had been no signs of it coming, it just all of a sudden started to go croaky and weak.

Fast forward to this morning, and despite having made sure to take a big dose of vitamin C before bed, which I normally find knocks cold symptoms on the head very quickly, I woke up with a horrible throat, sore and with a tickle, one of those annoying ones which you just can't seem to clear no matter how much you cough and try to clear your throat.

On my way to work I stopped off at the supermarket to get some throat sweets and was lucky enough to find they had the ones I think are the best, Halls Soothers, and even better, they had the flavour I prefer, Peach and Raspberry. These are about the only throat sweets which I like the flavour of, most of the others taste vile. I always think, if you've got a sore throat, the last thing you want on top of it is a horrible flavour in your mouth too.

Anyway, I got myself 4 packs of Soothers and got back on my way to work. I am now sitting at my desk writing this and sucking on a Soother, it is helping my throat and has stopped me coughing, so hoorah they work!!!

**** About Soothers ****

Soothers, made by Halls who make various other cough sweets (a part of Cadbury I have just noticed), only entered the market fairly recently (I've tried to find a date but not been successful) but have gone on to be one of the most popular throat sweet available.

The Soothers themselves are Sugar lozenges with a liquid centre, they are very much like Lockets which I'm sure everyone is familiar with, the only real difference being that they come in much much more palletable flavours.

When I was a child I had lockets on a few occassions and always found them to taste so bad that I would rather put up with the coughing. Soothers on the other hand are actually quite yummy, particularly the Peach and Raspberry flavour, and mean that no longer does soothing your throat involve a horrid taste.

As the outer lozenge dissolves they release menthol to help clear blocked airways, then when you reach the centre, you get a small amount of quite thick liquid centre which really helps to soothe the throat as it goes down.

They are packaged in a roll of 10 Lozenges and sell for about 50p for a pack, which is quite reasonable really.

**** My thoughts on Soothers ****

As I mentioned, when I was a kid I hated the flavours of Lockets, and also other throast sweets like Tunes etc, and would rather not have them, however now, when I have a sore throat I always get a few packs of soothers as I find they taste good and they do actually help.

There is sadly a downside, they only really do much soothing when you are actually sucking them, they don't have a very long lasting effect so you tend to end up having a lot of them during a day, which is probably not the best thing in the world for you, and soon starts to add up cost wise when you can get through a few packs in a day and might need them for a few days. I have in the past tried some other throat lozenges which contain a local anasthetic, which works for a very much longer time but they do taste a little horrid, so it's a bit of a toss up between the two.

Personally I stick to the Soothers because at least they taste good, and they do help while you are sucking them.

Summary: Nice and Soothing
