Generally, i'm quite a healthy person - having only one or two colds per year. One of these colds always starts just after Christmas time, and lasts up until the new year. This year it's been the same, I started feeling ill on the 26th - with an extreme sore throat, blocked nose, sneezing, etc etc, and am still in the grip of 'man flu' at the time of writing.

My throat has been particularly bad - normally a sore throat only causes me discomfort when I swallow, but this one is a constant soreness which feels like someone is sandpapering the back of my mouth! If there's one thing which has helped me out over the past week, it's been the trusty throat sweet.

Now, I don't have a particular brand that I usually go for, it's more a case of choosing the flavour rather than the make - generally avoiding the yellowy lemony flavours, and going straight for the purply blackberry type option. This year, this taste-based selection led me to Halls Soothers, which claims to contains real fruit juice.

Costing 48p from Tesco's, Soothers contain ten individually wrapped lozenges in each packet.

The initial taste of the blackcurrant variety is quite sweet, and very fruity at the same time. After sucking for roughly five seconds, my burning throat had begun to calm down, and I could once agin swallow without discomfort. The most pleasing thing about Soothers however, is that when you suck through to the centre, there is a syrupy section which lines the throat, preventing any further aggravation.

I would wholly recommend Halls Soothers as an effective method of easing the pain of a sore throat. I'm just about to start on a packet of rival 'Lockets' and will compare them in my next review.

Summary: efficient product
