Advantages: Taste good and seem to help

Disadvantages: none

So over the past week I've had a really bad cold. you all know the symptoms; a cough, blocked nose, sore throat etc. Normally I don't get a sore throat, ever since I had my tonsils out 6 years ago. This week however it's been really sore, to the point where it's affecting what I eat. i promptly dispatched my husband to buy some cold relief remedies and one of the things he came back with was Halls Soother in the Blackcurrant flavour.

I always had the impression that throat sweets weren't very nice, but at that point I was prepared to try anything! When I opened that first sweet and popped it into my mouth I was expecting it to taste like medicine, but I was pleasantly surprised. The outer layer of the sweet is hard like a boiled sweet and very blackcurranty. Even though it went against the grain, I resisted the temptation to crunch down and sucked on the sweet for as long as possible.

The inside of the sweet has a liquid centre meant to soothe sore throats. I found the consistency of the liquid centre spot on. Too runny and it would just taste watery, too hard and it would be too much like the sweet. As is is, it seemed to coat my throat while I swallowed it giving extra relief. The liquid centre also had a strong blackcurrant flavour with nothing discernibly artificial.

I found them to be helpful and went through approx 2 packets per day, but I'm not sure whether that's because they actually helped, or whether it's because I THOUGHT they would help. Thinking about it, maybe is because they stimulate saliva production which could help ease a sore throat.

Summary: Good for soothing sore throats
