Advantages: Does not redden skin, does not irritate skin, does not stink

Disadvantages: none

Since my mid-twenties I have suffered from cervical spondylosis, which is a degenerative disorder of the cervical spine. Much of the time I am free from pain, but when I do get a flare-up I can feel quite ill. I get a lot of stiffness in my neck, pain in my neck and shoulders, stinging headaches, dizziness and a temperature. I have found Ibuleve Gel to be very useful in relieving these distressing symptoms.

The active ingredient in Ibuleve is ibuprofen, a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug. Until I discovered Ibuleve, I used to take ibuprofen orally and it helped a lot with the pain. However, I am very cautious when taking any pain-killing tablets and I much prefer to use this topical gel.

The gel is clear and has hardly any smell at all, unlike some other ointments which are very pungent. Also, the gel does not redden the skin as these other ointments do.

You simply apply a thin layer of the gel to the painful area and massage it in until it is completely absorbed. (Better still; get some one else to massage it in for you) The gel is absorbed through the skin to help reduce the inflammation and ease the pain, although not so much of the active ingredient gets into the bloodstream as through oral use. Nevertheless, this is still a medicine and should be treated with care. You are advised to apply the gel only three times a day. The gel is, of course, not to be taken internally.

Most importantly, patients who have experienced problems with ibuprofen, or who have asthma, peptic ulcer or kidney problems should consult their GP before using Ibuleve Gel.You should beware of using other painkillers while using the gel. The golden rule is “if in doubt, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.”

Ibuleve is effective in the treatment of rheumatic pain, lumbago, fibrositis and muscular pain, and many arthritic conditions. I have found myself that the gel works quite quickly and I am sure that the massaging helps too.

Ibuleve gel is available from pharmacies and a 50g tube costs about £5. (It may be slightly more as I have been using my tube for ages.)
