Advantages: Convenient to carry, easy to apply, effective protection
Disadvantages: More expensive than the creams, might need to reapply
As I have mentioned in a previous review (for Soltan Sun Cream with Insect Repellent) I am one of those people who gets absolutely eaten alive in countries where mosquitos are about, I put it down to having incredibly tasty blood!
Last year I went on a road trip in Queensland, Australia and knew that I would be venturing deep into Rainforest and spending tons of time outside in mozzie infested areas, I was therefore determined to be well armed against the risk and took some of these wipes with me so I could carry them in my bag without taking up loads of room and could quickly wipe myself down if needs be.
I have used the Jungle Formula range a number of times in tropical locations but sometimes find the smell of it rather overwhelming and unplesent and the gels and creams can be very thick and sticky and a nightmare to apply, this was why I went for the wipes which I had never tried before. I know that Jungle Formula products are 50% DEET, which is the active ingredient that kills and repells the little blighters and I do know that they work, I am just not a big fan of slathering them on over a load of sun block, I begin to feel like im covered in jam.
So, I picked up a pack of 15 wipes for £4.99 in Boots, at the time they were on a 3 for 2 offer so I also got some of the spray aswell and as the cheapest item the wipes were actually free. A good start!
The box contains 15 individually sealed wipes, they are flat and about 6cm square in a foil packet. There is a 'tear here' split in one side so they are easy to get into and fit easily into your purse or bag or pocket. When opened you have what feels like a large wet wipe which is impregnated with the formula.
The towel method of applying is ideal as you know you are covering each area you rub it on properly, I tended to immediately do my ankles and calves as for some reason this is where I get bitten the most. One tissue will cover a good area and the protection claims to last about 6 hours which seems believable to me.
When wearing this stuff I did not get bitten half as much as I usually would, especially given the very tropical location we were in. I cannot say it totally prevents bites as in my experience it does not, I do think it dramatically reduces the amount of bites you will receive though - if applied properly.
For me the convenience of these wipes is the best thing about them, they were very handy when we had gone out in an evening and meant that I didnt have to carry a bottle of nasty spray with me everywhere and treat those around me to the fumes, using these is much more subtle and enjoyable.
I do think application is much easier with these wipes and the protection you get is on a par with the sprays and creams, I guess the one downside is that with the creams etc you could apply once and not need to again for many hours and for the price you get a lot less of the actual formula with the wipes. They are definitely intended as a complimentary product to the normal range, but in my opinion they are definitely worth the money.
A great product for those prone to bites, fantastically easy to use, convenient to carry and effective.
Summary: Great product which will save you getting bitten, well worth it!

- 10/07/09 Useless fact of the day: insect repellent doesn't actually actively repel insects, rather, it makes you invisible to them. Isn't that interesting...? |
