Advantages: may help arthritic pain
Disadvantages: contra indications need to be looked at carefully before use
There are more than fifty different species of juniper tree so you need to know the latin name of the one that produces genuine, quality, juniper essential oil, before you go to buy it. It is very common to find this oil mixed with other oils, or even turps to make it go further. Smell the oil and only buy from a reputable dealer (this rule applies to all essential oils.) This oil is steam distilled from the berries of the juniperis communis tree. The aroma is clear, sharp and spicey and it is often used commercially as a base for aftershaves. The oil is colourless to pale yellow but darkens with age. USES: +++++ Purifying and settling emotional effect. It is said to help the mind get rid of past worries and let go. Helps eliminate fluids and toxic waste from the body. Temporary relief from rheumatism and arthritis. Helps PMS. Gout. Helps clear urinary infections. Lowers blood pressure (do not use if you have low blood pressure already.) How to use: +++++++++++ Use for massage if mixed with a carrier oil, or cream. A warm compress can help relieve pain in arthritis and rheumatism. Warning: ++++++++ Do not use if pregnant as juniper is an abortifacient. Do not use if you have liver or kidney problems as it has a diuretic action. Never take internally. Do not apply neat. Do not exceed recommended amount as burning can occur. Verdict: ++++++++ Not an oil that I would recommend to untrained users. You have to use this oil is the correct way as it can cause problems in some people. It affects the kidneys and liver, so too much, or incorrect useage could cause problems in that area. If you have already had an sort of kidney or liver problem it isn't wise to use this without advice. If you want to use this oil, especially for the relief of art
hritis I would suggest that you ask a professional for advice first. Incidentally, although I don't normally use this oil, I have heard from a couple of people that it does help arthritic pain.

- 27/09/01 great op, often wondered about the different oils used in massage. You normally see them in Boots or somewhere that just say "relaxing", "revitalising". Another tip for those with arthritus is to avoid too many dairy products (had arthritus as a kid). |
