Karvol Vapour Rub
Advantages: Relieves my blocked nose
Disadvantages: Sticky to the touch, not as good as Vicks
I recently run out of my tub of Vicks VapoRub and decided to give another brand a try to see if they were just as good as Vicks. I settled on Karvol vapour rub, I use the Karvol drops for my daughter so thought this could be just as good.
----- Different uses-----
There are two different ways in which you could use Karvols vapour rub, either rubbing it directly on the skin, or inhaling the vapours.
The rub on method can be used for babies over the age of 6 months, simply rub a small amount onto their chests. For older children and adults, rub a good amount on your chest and back.
The inhalation method is only suitable for older children and adults, add one teaspoon of the rub into a bowl of hot water (but not boiling) and inhale the vapour. Some people do this under a towel to keep all the vapours in that space.
----- Our experience -----
The packaging of this vapour rub fits in well with the Karvol brand with the same blue cardboard box as it's other products. Inside the box is the 45g tub of vapour rub. The tub is a deep blue colour with a screw top lid.
As soon as you unscrew the lid you are instantly hit with a menthol smell, it's a bit different to Vicks as Vicks is really strong, this is more subtle but still easily noticeable. The rub itself is quite thick and gloopy in consistency, a bit like Vaseline but more sticky.
When it's applied, the rub doesn't melt away in your fingers like Vicks does and it leaves your fingers sticky and horrible so I always have a wet wipe to hand when applying. My daughter doesn't mind me rubbing this on her chest so I guess she likes the smell.
I can't say whether or not it helps my daughter when she is asleep as I team it up with Karvol decongestant drops. I use it myself and I can feel it working. I lie on my side, so without any vapour rub one side of my nose always gets blocked and I find myself tossing and turning all night once one side has become blocked. If I use this rub I don't have that problem and can have a fairly good sleep, depending on whether or not I've got a cough too.
Karvol vapour rub is widely available in supermarkets and chemists for around £3 for 45g tub.
I would recommend the vapour rub, it does the job it's supposed to do. For myself personally, I would rather buy Vicks over this Karvol vapour rub and will be purchasing that once my tub of Karvol runs out.
Summary: Buy Vicks!
