Kleenex Balsam Tissues
Advantages: Soothing, good size, recyclable packaging, often on offer
Disadvantages: none that I can think of
Follow a horrendous head cold that lasted a week, my nose got pretty sore by the end of it what with all the blowing and wiping. So with 'sod' being a law unto himself, it was on the last maybe two to three days of the illness that I stumbled across a triple pack of Kleenex Balsam tissues that I had purchased months ago "ready" for when I got my next cold and had hidden away in a cupboard so they wouldn't be used before this time.
Needless to say I won't be doing that again and instead will have them in a box with all the other cold and flu remedies so I will remember I have them!
For those who may never have tried these they do look like an ordinary tissue. The box is a typical rectangular shape in the brand colours of yellow green and blue all blended into each other.
To get inside there is a perforated rectangle of card on one side and a little "finger hole" to allow you to hook in and zip this piece of card off. Unlike some tissue boxes, the cover comes off perfectly every time rather than tearing into pieces and leaving you trying to rip them all off to get the tissues out.
Beneath this is the usual clear plastic sheet with a hole in the centre to allow the tissues to be drawn out through.
The tissues are folded in such a way that when one is pulled the next pops up and is then held in place by the clear plastic sheet for easy grab. A small convenience but when you are full of a cold the last thing you want to do it struggle to snag a tissue without pulling out about 20 in one go.
The tisues are around 20cm x 20cm and are 3 ply. There are mansize tissues and even small handy pocket versions of this, but the regular are the above size.
Kleenex have brought out a new slimmer box that hold the same quantity (80)
The new slimmer box is 23cm x 11.5cm x5cm which means it can fit nicely in drawers.
The tissues are known for their soothing balsam quality that is meant to be soft and gentle on your skin. As someone who not only suffers colds but also allergies I can state with confidence that this is 100% true. These tissues are so gentle that even after using non-balsam tissues for days and making my nose raw, just a few days after of using these and my nose was not just "not feeling any worse" it was actually feeling better, soothed.
These tissues are disposable so once used need to be disposed of either in the bin, fire (if you have a wood burning stove etc) or maybe in the compost bin - I know most tissues break down.
All the packaging is recycleable. The box is cardboard and can be easily recycled. The plastic liner sheet can be easily removed (before you recycle the cardboard) and can either be recycled depending on your Household Waste Centre. Unfortuantely my Household Waste Centre does not offer the ability to recycle this type of plastic but being environmentally conscience this plastic (as it is the stretchy type) can be recycled by a company called that I believe can be recycled by a company called Polyprint Mailing Film Limited in Norfolk. I personally save all my stretchy plastics and then send them off to the company when I have a good amount.
~Price & Retailer~
The cost is usually around the £3.50 mark however there are lots of offers such as triple packs or buy 2 get 3rd free in a lot of supermarkets. I think this is another one of those products that the price increases on when we get closer to winter so it's a good idea to look out for deals and stock up on them before a cold hits you.
Get these and keep them for when you have a really bad cold/flu and will be blowing your nose a lot. It is totally worth the cost. However I wouldn't use them for day to day use as there are cheaper alternatives that are good for this.
Summary: A great product
