Well its Jan 2nd 2004 and im at home, in bed (well i have been since 3pm yesterday until 2pm today) with a flu bug!

(",) What is flu (",)

For those of you who do not know the difference between a common cold and the flu (men pay attention) then im about to tell you.

Influenza, also known as the flu, is a contagious disease that is caused by the influenza virus. Flu usually comes on quickly and has a number of symptoms.

Those people who contract the flu will recover between 1 and 2 weeks, depending upon the severity of the disease. Some people can even go on to catch Pneumonia which can be life-threatening if not treated properly.

(",) What are the symptoms? (",)

Unlike Man Flu (Which is where a bloke sneezes and he is on deaths bed) proper flu makes you feel like a big achey pile of poo to be honest.

You get a headache, bodyaches, sinus problems, a sore throat and a fever.

Yesterday i was in bed with a massive headache which felt like someone was stamping on my head. I had back ache, neckache, leg ache, arm ache and i couldnt get comfortable, no matter which way i turned to sleep, it hurt!

Ive had a sore throat for a good few days, its usually a sign that im going to have my second visit of the year of tonsilitus. My own fault as i refuse to have them taken out.

Then came the fever. When your hot your cold and when your cold you hot. A man would say this is all about being a woman, never knowing what you want. Trust me it is the worst feeling in the world. I was in bed with some fleece Winnie the Pooh PJ's on, in my sleeping bad with a 15.0 tog king size quilt on and a heater next to me, the central heating was on 25 degree's and i was freezing. Then a few hours later i had to put on shorts and a t-shirt because i was sweating buckets and li
ke so for the next eight to ten hours i was constantly hot, then i was cold.

Thankfully im one of those people who keeps everything from Lemsip, Night Nurse, Ibuprofen and cough medicine in the bathroom cupboard, so if i am ever ill, which is a rarity, ive got something to take.

(",) Cold or Flu? (",)

The symptoms i have just listed are also those of a common cold, and both can seem alikehowever there is a huge difference between the two.

If you have a fever, your temperature with flu can be anything from 102 upto 104 and lasts for about 3 or 4 days. With a cold it is rare that fever like symptoms will occur, but incase they do your temperature should not exceed 102. My temperature was 104 yesterday and is now 102.

A headache with a cold is rare and usually linked to sinus problems whereas with flu it can be sudden and very severe and almost migraine like.

Muscal Aches with Flu are very common and can be very severe as i have already mentioned, with a cold they are very rare and mild.

Tiredness and weakness, again a common factor of having flu and not directly linked to having a cold.

Runny Nose, this is the major difference with a cold and flu, with a cold it is more common than with Flu. I have sinus problems but dont have the runny nose, although you can get them.

Sneezing, im yet to start sneezing and like with a runny nose these are common factors of a cold and not with flu, although you can get them.

Sore throat, ive had this for a good few days now which has meant i cant talk very much or for very long, but again these symptoms are more directly linked to a cold than with flu, although you can get them.

Cough, i do have one of these and it is a really horrible deep cough which actually hurts and again is linked to both a cold and the flu.

It can be near on impossible to tell whether or not you have a bad cold or a mild form of the f
lu and whether it will lead to anything more. I would suggest checking with your doctor, who can perform a few simple checks on you to make sure it is nothing more. Especially if you are not prone to cold and flu like symtoms.

(",) What to do if you get the flu (",)

Influenza is a virus and cannot be treated with antibiotics like penicillin. However, the best thing you can do if you get the flu is to do exactly what my Doctor told me to do:

1) Rest - i slept for 16 hours solid
2) Drink plenty of liquids. Im sure you have heard "Feed a cold and starve a fever"
3) Avoid alcohol - although my Nan swears that i should drink Hot whisky and Lemonaide.
4) Take something to relieve the symptoms.

Now if you have got the flu your not going to feel like getting out of bed, i certainly didnt, i dragged myself out of bed for New Years Eve and didnt drink and was straight back in bed as soon as possible and have stayed there until late this afternoon.

(",) So what can i take to get rid of it (",)

As Flu is very contagious and you can pass it on upto 7 days after the symptoms start, i suggest you get something as soon as you can.

Lemsip is one of those brands that mose people trust and will have heard of. It can be found in every supermarket, high street drugstore like Boots and Superdrug and your local pharmacy.

Lemsip do a wide range of products to suit everyone from capsules and tablets which dissolve on your tongue to soothing hot drinks.

I opted for Lemsip Max Strength because i have an important meeting on Sunday night which i dont want to miss if i dont have to, followed by another one on Monday night.

There are many supermarkets which do their own brands but i prefer Lemsip as i know its one i can trust.

(",) What do you do with it (",)

Although you should always read the label on anything like this, or ask a pharma
cist, Lemsip is in sachets and all you need to do is boil a kettle and get a mug and empty the sachet into a mug, add the boiling water and stir it until the powder has dissolved fully and then be careful not to burn your mouth or tongue when drinking it but do drink it whilst it is still relatively warm.

(",) The taste (",)

Well its certainly not an acquired taste and is very lemony, it would be nice when you have the flu to have no taste buds, as im sure it would make taking half the medicines easier.

However, it tastes worse if it is cold but the best description is that it tastes of lemon.

(",) WARNING (",)

It does contain:

• 1000mg paracetamol
• 12.2mg phenylephrine hydrochloride

So be careful not to take something else whilst taking this because the last thing you want to do is take an accidental overdose. Which is why you should make sure you always read the label.

(",) More information (",)

If your still not sure which product from Lemsip you would prefer then they do have a website, go to www.Lemsip.com and here you will find all of their products listed along with which illness they are for, who can take them and advice on what to do next.

I bought my Lemsip from the pharmacy across the road a month or so ago and it still has the sticker on it saying £3.99. Im sure it will be cheaper in some Supermarkets if you have got time to look around, but always make sure you have something like Lemsip in the cupboard because you never know when your going to need it!

Since taking Lemsip I do feel alot better today and i have been able to get out of bed but i do still ache and have a temperature so it isnt a miracle cure but you will soon notice the difference. Hopefully soon i'll get my appetite back.

REMEMBER TO ALWAYS READ THE LABEL and ask your doctor or the pharmacist if your on other medication!

Poor you, hope you are all better now! I have managed to avoid this wretched flu bug so far *touches wood just in case* But I swear by Lemsip when I do get colds or flu, and always good for the sympathy vote if everyone else is drinking tea!
